MPL Connect
                                   June 2023
From the Director:

Did you know that in the RGV, one in two children experience food insecurity? To help alleviate that burden, the Main Library will once again be a feeding site for the annual Summer Meals Program, in partnership with McAllen ISD and the Texas Department of Agriculture. There is no need to be a McAllen ISD student to participate in nutritious meals and snacks at MPL and participating feeding sites. The only requirement is that youth must be 18 years and younger and must consume the meals on site (no take-away) as pre-pandemic regulations resume. The program begins on June 1st and runs through July 28th.

Summer Reading Challenge 2023 registration begins on June 1st! Children, teens, and adults are invited to take part in this year's six-week SRC. Families will have fun collaboratively or individually completing 10 of 15 challenges to earn an original design MPL t-shirt, book, and other fun prizes. Join us on Saturday, June 3rd for our SRC Kickoff Party at the Main Library! Enjoy community partners, giveaways, snacks, games and activities for all ages. Team members will be on hand to assist with Summer Reading Challenge registration and programming information throughout the event. Summer programming calendars are now available at all three McAllen Public Library locations and on our social media pages. Log on to mcallenlibrary.beanstack.org to register.

Celebrate the inaugural Raspas Con Mi Grandpa Day with us on Monday, June 19th at McAllen Public Library! Author Eliza Garza's book has inspired a day of celebration and family. The event kicks off at 3:30pm with a City of McAllen proclamation and press conference. All attendees are invited to stay for free raspas and goodies. Books will be on hand for purchase and signing by the author.

I hope to see you and your family at our many programs and services this summer!

Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg

“This novel’s marvelous ambition: To show how easily marginalized voices are erased from
our histories—and that restoring those voices is a disruptive project of devotion.
A singular, daring, and thrilling novel: political, sexy, and cunning as a fox.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The Personal Librarian by Heather Terrell

“An extraordinary tale that is both brilliant historical fiction and an important and timely commentary on racism. By holding up an unflinching mirror and illuminating this little-known chapter in American history, these two gifted authors have penned a work that is a must-read.”
—Pam Jenoff

Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

"Madeline Miller’s brilliant first novel...is a story of great, passionate love between Achilles and Patroclus....[R]ewriting the Western world’s first and greatest war novel is an awesome task to undertake. That she did it with such grace, style and suspense is astonishing.”

The Immortal Life of Herietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

“It’s extremely rare when a reporter’s passion finds its match in a story. Rarer still when the people in that story courageously join that reporter in the search for what we most need to know about ourselves. When this occurs with a moral journalist who is also a true writer, a human being  with a heart capable of holding all of life’s damage and joy, the stars have aligned.  This is an extraordinary gift of a book, beautiful and devastating—a work of outstanding literary reportage. Read it! It’s the best you will find in many many years.”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo byTaylor Jenkins Reid

“Aging and reclusive Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unkown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
