MPL Connect
                                March 2023
From the Director:

Last month’s third annual World Languages Festival was a great success with more than 3000 attendees! The event highlighted the amazing and ever-growing diversity of the RGV and brought people together with a focus on celebration and good will. This month, MPL sponsors its second annual Community Health Fair on Saturday, March 25, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Free health screenings include Body Mass Index (BMI), blood glucose, vision and hearing tests, pediatric development, oral health, and hygiene. Free blood pressure screenings will be available and a cooking class on using spices and herbs to lower blood pressure. Children’s activities for all ages include a giant slide, children’s yoga class, video game dancing, jump ropes, and hula-hoops. The public will receive free health screenings and many of our health and wellness partners will be on hand to provide giveaways and information on how to live your best life and receive the care you and your family need. McAllen residents have shown a keen interest in getting healthy. Last year for the fifth year in a row, the City of McAllen won first place in the large city category in the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge, a statewide health initiative to combat obesity and encourage people to eat healthy foods, hydrate, and move more. MPL is proud to be part of the overall effort to offer health-oriented services and opportunities to our patrons and visitors. Good health is a family affair!

Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown

"Molly Bolt is a genuine descendant—genuine female descendant—of Huckleberry Finn. And Rita Mae Brown is, like Mark Twain, a serious writer who gets her messages across through laughter.”—Donna E. Shalala

We Begin at the End  by Chris Whitaker

“Couldn’t put it down. Incredible writing,  characters so brilliantly drawn they jump off the page. Outstanding.” ― B. A. Paris, bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors

The Henna Artist  by Alka Joshi

"The Henna Artist is a delicious, old-fashioned tale about timeless heartaches. There's something elemental and mythic about Lakshmi and her knowledge of spices, roots, oils, and barks that drew me into the kind of world I gladly lived in when reading fairy tales as a child, a place inhabited by powerful queens, talking birds, magical drinks, orphans, sad princesses, clever servants, and dangerous poisons. I'm in awe of Joshi's storytelling  and a little jealous of the character who winds up with the talking bird. “Namaste!” as he says. “Bonjour! Welcome! ---Laura McNeal, author of The Practice House

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

"Lucy Foley has honed her unique brand of reverse-whodunit suspense down to a science — and thank goodness for that. ... The Guest List—set at a ritzy wedding-gone-wrong on a remote Scottish isle—starts with a murder, and then plays a game of keep-away with the victim’s identity until the very last pages.” — Harper's Bazaar

The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay

“Think The Desperate Hours meets 10 Cloverfield Lane, but way, way stranger. With The Cabin at the End of the World, Paul Tremblay gives us a gloriously claustrophobic and gory tale of faith and paranoia. Signs and wonders and homemade battle-axes, oh my!” — Stewart O’Nan, author of The Speed Queen and A Prayer for the Dying

Registration is required and limited seating is available.
