MPL Connect
                                March 2022
From the Director:
MPL is excited to announce our second annual World Languages Festival on Saturday, March 26 from 2:00-4:00 pm. This Festival, which offers families a variety of cultural experiences and promotes our World Languages Collection, began in 2019 and was paused during the pandemic. Our featured highlight will be the Grand Opening of “Botanical Fridas,” a series of fifteen, beautifully rendered, 8-foot tall sculptures and fifteen mini-sculptures, each of which represents a different point of view of one of the most recognized female artists, Frida Kahlo. The “Botanical Fridas” project was born from the concept of creating a cultural, artistic, and multi-national proposal that would serve as a turning point in public art installations around the world. And, like Frida Kahlo, each sculpture is accompanied by a mascot – a monkey, a xoloitzcuintle, and a deer. This exhibition debuted at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens and will tour internationally. Other scheduled activities include food samples from area restaurants, featuring Korean, Filipino, and Mexican cuisines, a Tagalog calligraphy demonstration, a Korean language presentation with Dr. Mijin Oh-Villarreal, and a variety of Mexican-inspired crafts to engage visitors. This year, with the safety of our visitors and staff in mind, we will have the Festival in person and will provide hand sanitizer and hand-washing facilities to everyone. Masks are not required, but are encouraged. For more information, please go to the MPL website at www.mcallenlibrary.net.

Ficciones por Jose Luis Borges
.

The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi

Vivid and compelling in its portrait of one woman’s struggle for fulfillment in a society pivoting between the traditional and the modern, The Henna Arist opens a door into a world that is at once lush and fascinating, stark and cruel. -Amazon.com
