Access Thousands of Free Magazines!

Do you know that you can read magazines for free with your MPL patron card? MPL offers thousands of magazine titles through cloudLibrary NewsStand, which offers titles in English, Spanish. Chinese, Korean, and many other languages! NewsStand offers popular titles in a wide variety of categories, like Animals & Pets, Health, Automotive, Fashion, Celebrities, Food & Cooking, and much more. You’ll also find magazines on parenting, and specialized titles just for children and teens. NewsStand is available to anyone with a library card from any of our thirteen Hidalgo County Libraries. cloudLibrary also offers streaming movies, documentaries and shows. In addition to celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islanders Month with MPL’s diverse programming, you can stream AANHPI Month selections on your phone or tablet, or download an AANHPI e-book or e-audiobook. https://bit.ly/CloudLibraryNewSstand

Orchid Park Update!

Great news! Our Orchid Avenue playground now has a shade cover, just in time for the hot weather. Our Library Advisory Board President, Dr. Joseph Ryan, says, “We invite families to bring their children to enjoy the playground. The new shade cover will help make this area a year-round place for family enjoyment.” This month, we will also install a bench and trash cans. This final phase, along with new fencing and accessible picnic tables, creates a wonderful environment for families to have fun and spend more time at the Library.

Thank You To Our Community For Supporting Our Events!

Our Dia event was a great success, despite the heat! More than 2872 attendees received free books, popcorn, crafts, Marty the Library Cat tattoos, and experienced two wonderful authors/storytellers and a visit from Pete the Cat! Special thanks to the Nikki Rowe Mariachi Azteca band for treating the crowd to great music!

A huge thank you to Mayor Javier Villalobos and Commissioner Rodolfo "Rudy Castillo" and his family for attending the 2nd Annual Palm View Community Health Fair, hosted by Palm View Branch Library. "This year, more than 310 patrons had access to a comprehensive array of health screenings and educational resources from community partners and health professionals," stated Esther Herrera Martínez, PhD, Palm View Branch Manager. "Patrons learned about healthy eating habits and the importance of staying active any age through informative sessions and Zumba sessions."

My Term as TLA Conference Co-Chair 2024

As of last week, I completed my term as Co-Chair of the Texas Library Association Conference Planning Committee 2024. This was the first time a Co-Chair was selected to represent South Texas! It was a privilege to work with the Planning Committee, TLA Staff, and TLA President Gretchen Pruett. It was also a thrill to be chosen to introduce General Session Keynote Speaker, George Takei! I will never forget my experience as Co-Chair and I felt proud to represent South Texas at our annual conference!

What is your favorite book genre? And why?

Science Fiction, because real science is cool, and sci-fi is

even cooler.

If you could have an animal sidekick, what would it be? Why?

Raven, they're smart and would probably bring me shiny things.

What do you enjoy most about working at a library?

Working with the staff! :)

What game show do you think you could win?

The Floor is Lava

What book series would you like to live in?
