The Distinguished Author Series Features the Versatility of Acclaimed Writer Mitch Albom
The Santa Clara County Library District is proud to present the Distinguished Author Series. This author program aspires to bring together diverse writers whose words strike a chord with readers and spark thought-provoking ideas and discussions. Join us for what will be an enlightening talk with acclaimed fiction and nonfiction writer Mitch Albom.

Albom's versatility is unparalleled. Originally known as a renowned sports journalist, Albom touched the hearts of readers with 1997's beloved memoir Tuesdays with Morrie and enthralled readers with The Five People You Meet in Heaven. This talk is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Albom's new book, The Little Liar. This novel, set to be released on November 14, explores honesty, survival, revenge and devotion in a story set during the Holocaust.

Announcing Silicon Valley Reads 2024
The community engagement reading program, Silicon Valley Reads is back in 2024 with the theme, “A Greener Tomorrow Starts Today.” The program will focus on environmental sustainability, with a selection of books and events that explore the challenges and opportunities of creating a more sustainable future.

Silicon Valley Reads has carefully selected three books that encapsulate the spirit of our theme and encourage meaningful conversations:

"All We Can Save" (Non-fiction), edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson & Katharine K. Wilkinson
"All We Can Save" showcases the wisdom and experiences of dozens of women actively contributing to environmental initiatives in the United States.

"One Green Thing" (Non-fiction), by Heather White
Through heartwarming and humorous anecdotes from her upbringing in East Tennessee to her experiences parenting in Montana, White demonstrates how people can contribute to the environmental movement.

"The Light Pirate" (Fiction), by Lily Brooks-Dalton
Set in a world where Florida faces the relentless onslaught of extreme weather and rising sea levels, "The Light Pirate" is the story of a small coastal town preparing for a powerful hurricane.

Silicon Valley Reads has a curated list of recommended fiction and nonfiction reading that explores the complex topic of sustainability: "Under a White Sky" by Elizabeth Kolbert, "Working to Restore" by Esha Chhabra, "Burnt" by Clare Frank, and "Damnation Spring" by Ash Davidson.

Silicon Valley Reads is also announcing the selection of four companion books for children and teens: “To Change a Planet”  by Christina Soontornvat for PreK-K, “The Forest Man” by Anne Matheson for Grades 1-4, “Two Degrees” by Alan Gratz for Grades 4-8, and “Don’t Call Me a Hurricane” by Ellen Hagan for teens and young adults.

MORE FROM THE LIBRARY

Vaccines Available
Health officials with the County of Santa Clara are strongly recommending everyone get vaccinated this fall to protect themselves and others from circulating viruses.

There are new options for RSV protection, and updated COVID vaccine, and this year’s flu shot now widely available in doctors’ offices and pharmacies. Find a clinic and schedule an appointment or drop in at these locations.

The county is also relaunching a dashboard where the public can track common viruses, transmission and risk in the community. This can help people understand RSV and flu activity and take the appropriate steps to stay protected.
New Service at Los Altos Library
Patrons are now able to book a Meeting or Study Pod. There are three different models to cater to your needs: a private workplace for one person, a private meeting space that can accommodate four people, and a space for up to eight people.
