Join Silicon Valley Reads 2022

We are one month into our annual community reading program, and there is still so much more of Silicon Valley Reads to enjoy! Three memoirs that embody the theme of The Power of Kindness, Resilience & Hope, have been selected:

-See No Stranger by Valarie Kaur
-Enough About Me by Richard Lui
-A Dream Called Home by Reyna Grande

Be sure to check out the companion books for younger readers: The Big Umbrella by Amy June Bates (pre-K- K), The Girl in the Gold Dress by Christine Paik (1st-3rd grade), SHINE! by JJ and Chris Grabenstein (4th-8th grade), and Darius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorrum (High School).

There are dozens of events scheduled for the month of March. This includes author visits, book discussions, arts & crafts, storytimes, mental health panels and conversations, and much more. Find the full schedule of events and register online here.

One of March’s big events is a virtual author visit with featured author Richard Lui. His memoir is about the difficult decision he had to make -- leaving his dream job as a network anchor and return to San Francisco to care for his father. He ultimately learns how small choices toward selflessness can lead to a more satisfying life. Thank you to the Los Altos Library Endowment for supporting this program. Please register for this event.

People of all ages are invited to join our Reading Challenge. Register on Beanstack, read and log one book, and complete an activity. It’s that easy!

March is Women's History Month

Women’s History Month is observed every March by presidential proclamation. It is a time to honor women’s contributions in American history.

This year’s theme is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” According to the National Women’s History Alliance, it is “a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic, and also a recognition to the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.”

Both the Smithsonian Institute and the National Women’s History Museum are hosting virtual events throughout the month. Use our free eResources, The Great Courses, to watch documentaries and learn about the Women’s Movement, how the Civil War affected women, as well as the role of women in the early days of baseball. On March 21 & 28, our Virtual Film Club will discuss several documentaries about women making a difference. Find books about women's history on Overdrive.
