Celebrating Hispanic Heritage!

National Hispanic Heritage Month officially kicks off on Wednesday, September 15. It is a time to celebrate and honor the culture, achievements and contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States.

As of 2020, Hispanic and Latino Americans make up nearly 20% of the U.S. population, and constitute 25% of Santa Clara County’s population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Hispanic Americans have been influential in every part of this nation's history, from the arts to politics to business to the military.

We are celebrating Hispanic Heritage with events for people of all ages. Stop by Gilroy Library on Saturday, September 18 for Ballet Folklórico presented by Los Lupeños de San Jose. Be sure to pick up a Grab & Go Craft Bag after the performance. Teens can also pick up Grab & Go Craft Bags at their local SCCLD library (available to teens ages 13-18, while supplies last). We are hosting a Virtual Family Paint Night with Moya Arts on Saturday, September 25, and there will be another paint party for adults at Milpitas Library on Saturday, October 9.

Spanish and bilingual books, books for adults in English and Spanish, as well as our Spanish eBook collection on Overdrive are available to check out.

Top 100 Young Adult Books
of All Time
TIME Magazine recently released the 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time. It was certainly not an easy feat!

Editors and YA authors looked at books geared towards grades 8-12 or with characters in that age range, and books that explore adolescence, while also recognizing some books don’t fit into any of those categories! They also looked at artistry, originality, emotional impact, critical and popular reception and influence.

Many of these are classics, which have withstood the test of time. Others are relatively new, having been published in the last decade. Our Teen Librarians have created this booklist based on TIME Magazine’s piece.
