The Holiday Season is Here!

A lot of major holidays happen in December, and the library can help make holiday planning easy so you can spend more time with friends and family.

Make something special to give this year with our free online resource CreativeBug. There’s a winter collection for gift ideas including hand-stitched deer ornaments, woven paper stars and watercolor cards. Of course our libraries also carry Arts & Crafts books, and there are also free crafting programs for patrons to enjoy.

Visit Overdrive to download eBooks that can help you if you are hosting for the holidays. Also browse the digital cooking and food magazines such as Taste of Home, Food Network Magazine and Gourmet.

If you are looking for some entertainment, we’ve got you covered! Enjoy films and documentaries using our free video streaming service, Kanopy. There’s a section called Home Viewing for the Holidays that will get you into the holiday mood. Medici.tv offers access to the best of classical music including ballets, operas and concerts. Check out several performances of The Nutcracker. Stream or download holiday music using our eResource, Freegal.

SCCLD libraries will be closed on December 25 and January 1. Libraries will close at 5 p.m. on December 24 and 31. Our Online Library is open 24/7/365.

We hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

KIDS AND FAMILIES

Stop By For Storytime
According to First 5 California, every time you read or tell stories to babies or young children, you help their brains develop and grow strong. Even if they don’t comprehend what you are saying, your voice helps to boost development. Find some easy ways to incorporate reading into your day.

All of our libraries offer storytimes, whether you have a baby, toddler, preschooler or an older child. Check our calendar to see what will work best for you. There are storytimes on weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoons and evenings. There are also storytimes in other languages like Spanish, Mandarin and Vietnamese.

If you are looking for short storytime activities outside of our libraries’ schedules, visit our Storytime Online page. Enjoy recorded story snippets and songs by SCCLD children’s librarians in English, Spanish, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

Facing barriers at every turn, including a loan system, not having enough money for food, and navigating the judgments of professors and fellow students who didn’t understand the demands of attending college while under the poverty line.

Land’s first memoir, Maid, is about her experience being a low-income single mother struggling to get by. The book was adapted to television in 2021.
