Silicon Valley Reads Kicks Off Next Week! We invite you to join us on a Journey to New Beginnings when Silicon Valley Reads kicks off on Thursday, January 26. Three books that embody the theme, Journey to New Beginnings, have been selected: We are marking the 20-year anniversary of this countywide reading engagement program with special programs at schools, libraries and local organizations. To start things off, join us for an in-person and live-streamed author event with the three featured authors at De Anza College’s Visual & Performing Arts Center Theater in Cupertino. Whether you plan on attending in person or viewing the live-streamed event, registration is required. Find additional SCCLD events below in the newsletter. In addition to the three selected titles, there are four companion books for our younger readers: Coquí in the City by Nomar Perez (PreK-Grade 1), Sugar in Milk by Thrity N. Umrigar (Grades 2-4), When Stars are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed (Grades 5-8) and Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez (high school). Over the past few years during the COVID-19 pandemic, Silicon Valley Reads aimed to give people hope for the future, with themes like “Connecting” and “The Power of Kindness, Resilience and Hope.” It was clear that in 2023, the community is ready to move forward on a new journey. We hope you join us on this exciting adventure!

Emergency Preparedness As we’ve seen with recent winter storms and earthquakes, it is important to be prepared for emergencies. The County of Santa Clara suggests people Prepare in 4 Steps since disasters can happen at any time and planning can help make sure people stay safe. The four steps include: - Sign up for AlertSCC, the county’s official emergency alert and warning system.
- Make a plan and learn about the types of hazards and threats that could happen in your area, and what to do before, during and after they occur.
- Build Emergency Go Bags and Stay Kits that can help you survive on your own for 72 hours or until help arrives.
- Make a point to check on friends, families and neighbors who may need help.
