Discovery Starts with a Library Card! Every September, the American Libraries Association and libraries work together to make sure every child, teen, adult and senior has their own library card. From free access to books, eBooks, audiobooks, programs & activities for all ages, in-person and virtual homework help, movies, music, video games, genealogy, Headspace mindfulness app, Rosetta Stone, WSJ & NYT, to the expertise of our librarians, you may be spending hundreds or more per year for resources and services available for free from your local library. Find out how much money a library has saved you with this Library Value Calculator. This year’s honorary chair is Marley Dias. She created the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign to highlight Black female protagonists. It has turned into an international movement to collect and donate children’s books that feature Black girls as the lead character. To date, more than 13,000 books have been collected. SCCLD has partnered with all of the public school districts in our service area to offer free library eAccounts to all K-12 students. Find out what eAccounts can do for your students. We have more than 2,249,220 items in multiple languages in our collection. A SCCLD library card is valid at any of our eight locations and the Bookmobile. Do you know someone who needs a library card? Find SCCLD library card applications here or stop by any of our libraries.

International Literacy Day is Wednesday, September 8 Created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1967, International Literacy Day aims to remind people of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights. This year’s theme is “Literacy for a human-centered recovery: Narrowing the Digital Divide.” During the pandemic, when in-person schooling shifted to distance learning, the digital divide was even more pronounced. Find out more here. All of our libraries offer free Wi-Fi, as does our Bookmobile. Free WiFi is also available in the parking lots of the Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Milpitas, Morgan Hill and Saratoga Libraries. Patrons are also welcome to use our public computers and printers. Special Virtual Event: Takes on Shakes We still have spots available for this week’s special video series event. On Saturday, September 11, watch Takes on Romeo and Juliet, directed by Chris Steele. This features different interpretations of the balcony scene from the famous play: first, as we assume it should be played, followed by directorial ‘takes’ based on gender norms in the 16th, 19th and 21st centuries. You may find there is no “right way” to perform Shakespeare!
