Happy Birthday United States!

The United States turns 247 years old this week.

It was on July 4, 1776 when the Second Continental Congress officially passed the Declaration of Independence, declaring the American colonies free and independent states.

Let the library help you mark the occasion!

Find children’s books explaining the importance of the 4th of July. For more advanced readers, check out the Primary Sources and Archives page on our website. Resources include Ancestry Library, Britannica Library Reference Center and Fold3 Library Edition, which provides access to U.S. military records dating back to the Revolutionary War.

Independence Day is also when families celebrate with food, fireworks and fun. We can help with the food! Find a number of new grilling cookbooks at the library. Find additional recipes with our new online cooking resource, New York Times Cooking.

All SCCLD libraries will be closed and services unavailable on Tuesday, July 4. As always, our Online Library is available to you 24/7. We will see you back on Wednesday, July 5.

We encourage everyone to find a book or participate in an activity to help you find your voice. Find books for all ages and interests, and our schedule of free events here.

It’s easy to get started. Sign up or log in online using Beanstack. Earn a prize for reading 5 books and completing one activity this summer. Completion prizes will be available starting August 1, while supplies last.
