Learn About the Life of Activist Dolores Huerta in New Exhibit and Panel Discussion

Big news from the Santa Clara County Library District! SCCLD is happy to announce Gilroy Library will present the Smithsonian Institution Exhibition Service’s new bilingual exhibit, Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields/Revolución en los Campos. The exhibit will be on display at Gilroy Library from Saturday, November 5, 2022 to Monday, January 23, 2023.

Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields/Revolución en los Campos shares the compelling story of the activist and leader, and the farmworker movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It features reproductions of historic and personal photographs with text in English and Spanish. There's even an app designed to accompany the exhibition. This free app is available for iOS and Android. Search “Dolores Huerta” in the App Store or on Google Play.

In addition, Ms. Huerta will participate in a special Hispanic Heritage Month panel discussion on Saturday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Wheeler Center in Gilroy. She will be joined by educator and author Francisco Jiménez and filmmaker and actor Luis Valdez to discuss such topics as hardship and resiliency. There will be entertainment before and after the free panel discussion, including Aztec dancers at 1:00 p.m. and Mariachi music at 3:30 p.m. To learn more, visit sccld.org/dolores.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage and Culture
Every year, National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15. This month-long event celebrates the contributions and importance of Hispanics and Latinos to the United States as well as American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. This year’s theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.”

The commemoration began as a week-long celebration in 1968 during the Johnson administration. 20 years later, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observation to a month.

Join SCCLD celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Hispanic Americans. We have a variety of events planned, including bilingual musicians and storytellers Cascada de Flores, crafts for teens, an author visit with Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and of course, the Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields/Revolutión en los Campos exhibit and panel discussion. Check out our calendar here.

Celebrate the Freedom to Read!
The Santa Clara County Library District respects everyone’s freedom to read. That is what Banned Books Week is about – supporting the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some may consider unorthodox or unpopular, as well as valuing free and open access to information. On the 40th anniversary of this annual event, this year’s theme is, “Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.” Learn more in this blog.

The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) tracks attempts to ban or restrict books across the country. Every year, the OIF lists the banned or challenged titles. For many people, books offer a means to engage with similar and different ideas and perspectives. So get out there and celebrate the freedom to read!

The Distinguished Author Series Begins with Emily Chang
The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) is proud to announce the third annual Distinguished Author Series. SCCLD welcomes a trio of writers whose works spark thought-provoking ideas and conversations. We begin the series on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 p.m. at the Campbell Heritage Theatre with Emily Chang.

Chang will be joined on stage by Santa Clara County Supervisor and Library Joint Powers Authority Board Member Joe Simitian who will moderate the discussion. You are in for a wonderful evening and insightful discussion. There will be time for Q&A from the audience at the end of the talk.

September 17 is Constitution Day & Citizenship Day
It was on September 17, 1787 (235 years ago!) that our Founding Fathers signed the U.S. Constitution, the supreme law of the land. During this time, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is asking people to reflect on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and what it means to be a U.S. citizen.

Becoming a U.S. citizen is a dream for many, but for some, it can be a difficult road to navigate. Check out this blog that lists the 5 Steps to U.S. Citizenship. Find out how to apply, the tools you’ll need to study for the interview and more. We have additional resources on our website.
