April is Financial Literacy Month Financial Literacy Month began more than 20 years ago with the focus of raising awareness to the importance of financial literacy and the need for effective financial education. Financial literacy is having the knowledge to manage your money and reach meaningful goals. The Smart Investing Guide on our website was developed for all ages and incomes, and for various financial goals, whether learning about basic banking, buying a car, or protecting against identity theft. Financial literacy is such an important topic, especially for teens. That is why we are teaming up with KeyPoint Credit Union to offer a three-part series on financial literacy in April, designed for teens. Learn more here. The Financial Planning Association is presenting financial workshops in April. Join us on Friday, April 1 to learn about creating a successful retirement plan. On Friday, April 29, we will discuss asset allocation, an investment strategy that attempts to balance risk vs. reward in an investment portfolio.

Celebrate Poetry April is National Poetry Month. It was started in 1996, as a reminder that "poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters.” The Academy of American Poets has created a list of 30 Ways to Celebrate National Poetry Month. Our free eResource, Granger’s World of Poetry, has a great database featuring a number of poets and their works. The 2022-23 Santa Clara County Poet Laureate, Tshaka Campbell, is very active on social media. He has been highlighting previous County Poet Laureates, Women’s History Month and Black History Month. Keep up to date with him on the new Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Facebook page. We also invite teens to participate in our Teen Poetry Contest. Participants may submit up to three original poems that are no longer than 30 lines per poem. The last day to submit entries is Saturday, April 30. One winner from each library will be chosen in the following categories: Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12. Winners will be notified by Tuesday, May 31. Winners will receive a $50 gift card and bragging rights! Learn more and enter here. SCCLD also has a webpage that lists upcoming poetry events at our libraries. Check it out!
