SCCLD Celebrates Día/ Day of the Child This is a nationally recognized initiative that celebrates the importance of literacy for all children from all socio-economic backgrounds. It is a commitment to ensure all children and their families have access to diverse books, languages and cultures. Our librarians are always adding new blogs that feature some of our great resources, like National Geographic Kids, science experiments, or just interesting topics. Jazz Appreciation Month Created by the National Museum of American History in 2001, Jazz Appreciation Month aims to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz music. JAM encourages people of all ages to participate in jazz, from studying the music, going to concerts, listening to the radio and recordings, reading books about jazz, and more. This year’s theme, Latin Jazz and the Spirit of Cachao López, examines the cross-pollination of Afro-Caribbean music and jazz leading into the formation of Latin Jazz, as well as one of its iconic figures, Israel “Cachao” López. Celebrate Poetry We are closing National Poetry Month on a high note! Join us for a special in-person Poetry Month event at the Cupertino Library on Saturday, April 30. Hosted by Cupertino Poet Laureate Jing Jing Yang, this event will feature Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Tshaka Campbell, the Cupertino Poetry Circle, TEDx speaker Richard Goldman and creative writing instructor Lita Kurth. The event that will be held in the Community Room 101. Saturday, April 30 is the last day teens can submit original poems for our Teen Poetry Contest. April is National Lawn and Garden MonthNow that spring is here, people are going outside and working on their landscaping. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, Santa Clara County and much of the Bay Area is under a severe drought. Now may be the time to swap grass for drought tolerant plants and xeriscaping. Here is a list of books to help and inspire you to create a water-saving garden. Valley Water also offers a number of rebates to encourage residents and businesses to move to low-water landscapes, as well as to retrofit existing irrigation systems with high-efficiency equipment. Important Voting Information The last day to register to vote is in one month, on Monday, May 23. If you have changed your name or political affiliation, you must re-register to vote. Keep your eye out for Vote by Mail ballots starting the week of Monday, May 9. Most of our libraries will have ballot drop boxes. For people in Cupertino, a box will be located next to City Hall. For people in Campbell, you can find a drop box at the Campbell Avenue parking lot in the Campbell Community Center. Four locations will host early voting and Election Day voting sites. Join the Library with an Instant Free eCard If you live in Santa Clara County and do not have a library card with the Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD), or would like additional household members to have their own library accounts, the instant free eCard is for you. eCards are available to all residents who live within Santa Clara County Library District with a valid residential mailing address (P.O. Box not accepted). You can also visit any of our libraries during open hours to convert your eCard, or apply for a full use card to check out any of our physical and digital materials and resources.
