Summer Reading Preregistration Now Open We encourage all readers to explore the world through reading and to get out into the great outdoors! We will have many in-person and virtual events planned for kids, teens and adults including performers, book clubs and more. Reading Resource: Weston Woods Plus This vast database of children’s classics and modern favorites bring stories to life with interactive videos and resources. New readers can use the Read Along feature that highlights the words as they are spoken. Closed captioning is available to help develop language recognition. Also, Spanish and Mandarin translations are available for some titles. Patrons can enjoy a variety of materials for toddlers and school age children that can be filtered by grade, age, theme, and Lexile level.

Kindergarten Readiness Resources Most children begin school in Santa Clara County when they are five years old. Whether or not your child has attended preschool or a school readiness program, you can prepare your soon-to-be kindergartner with our newly developed, librarian-approved resources, including contact information for local school districts. We have divided the most important skillsets into six categories for you to explore and learn with your child. New Science Resources Experience science in a new way with two new online resources for students. Gale Interactive: Science helps students understand science beyond the text. Use interactive 3D models to bring science learning to life. Gale in Context: Environmental Studies gives access to nearly 400 pages across science, social studies and the humanities. This is a great way to research topics like land and water use, earth systems, pollution and more. Check out this blog for more details.

Starting Your Own Business If you have ever dreamt of starting your own business, the library can help you turn it into reality! We are partnering with SCORE to offer three workshops about that can help you decide if you are ready to launch into entrepreneurship: May 13: Should I Start a Small Business? AAPI Heritage Month Celebrations Continue We also invite patrons to a special Zoom presentation on Saturday, May 21, Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy. Now on display at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco, this exhibit looks at the work of the woman hailed as China’s first couturier. Register for this virtual event here. College Day: The Common Application Essay Prospective college students are invited to a special virtual event on Tuesday, May 17 at 5 p.m. We have experienced college counselors who are ready to help you write an admission essay that stands out. They can also offer students guidance about how to get into their college of choice and more.

Topics include art & design, sewing, quilting, paper, knitting, crochet, food & home, jewelry, holiday & party and crafts for kids. Vote by Mail Ballots Will Be Sent This Week The June 7 Primary Election is in less than a month away. SCCLD libraries will once again be playing a role in helping Santa Clara County residents exercise their right to vote. Vote by Mail ballots are being sent out this week. We have ballot drop off locations at all of our libraries with exceptions at Cupertino (which has a box next to City Hall) and Campbell Express (the drop off box is located at the Campbell Avenue parking lot).

Raising Awareness About Mental Health Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about the millions of Americans who live with a mental illness. It is a time to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illnesses and their families. Resources are available on the National Alliance of Mental Health’s website. The Community Resources page on our website can help people find Mental and Behavioral Health Assistance, Family Service, and Housing Assistance. We also offer free access to the app, Headspace. Try one of the hundreds of guided meditations that help relax you, center you or help you find mindfulness.

Join the Library with an Instant Free eCard If you live in Santa Clara County and do not have a library card with the Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD), or would like additional household members to have their own library accounts, the instant free eCard is for you. eCards are available to all residents who live within Santa Clara County Library District with a valid residential mailing address (P.O. Box not accepted). You can also visit any of our libraries during open hours to convert your eCard, or apply for a full use card to check out any of our physical and digital materials and resources.
