Celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 22 The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. More than 50 years later, it has become an international event with an estimated 1 billion people taking part. This annual observation honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the Earth’s environment and the issues that threaten it. This year’s theme is, “Invest in our Planet.” It calls for everyone to act boldly, innovate broadly and implement equitably a partnership for the planet where businesses, governments and citizens can all work together. Protect Yourself From ScammersOnline and telephone scams are increasing, and scammers keep finding new ways to take advantage of innocent people. SCCLD is hosting two special programs to talk about how you can protect yourself and your loved ones. Wednesday, April 19 @ 11 a.m. Saratoga Library Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Erin West has disrupted fraudulent call centers abroad and is actively working to combat the romance investment scammers. Join us as Deputy District Attorney West presents different types of scams and how you can protect yourself and your loved ones from falling victim. Please register. Saturday, April 29 @ 3 p.m. Cupertino Library On April 29 at the Cupertino Library, hear from Riana Pfefferkorn, a researcher at the Stanford Internet Observatory, talk about common scams and how to avoid them. Topics will include phishing, business email compromise, "computer support" scams, and more. She will also go over some computer security tips for keeping your information safe online. Register here. El Día de los Niños/ El Día de los Libros (Children's Day/Book Day) is April 30 Celebrate children, families, and reading on Sunday, April 30. This annual celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Find books about Día here. SED Talks for Teens Our next SED Talk teen speaker series is on Saturday, April 22 at 3 p.m. at Saratoga Library. The theme is Words for Impact. Whether it be writing a poem or advocating for environmental bills, to harness writing as a tool to affect others is an invaluable skill. Join us for in-person talks, discussions and activities on how to use writing as a form of advocacy for teens. This event is organized by the Saratoga Youth Commission and the Saratoga Library Teen Advisory Board. Speakers include a retired college professor and poet, a student journalist, and a Sierra Club advocate.

Monthly Virtual Author Visits We are proud to present a virtual monthly author talk series featuring bestselling, award-winning, and highly acclaimed authors from around the world. The featured writers and thought leaders will cover a wide range of fiction and nonfiction genres. The free, virtual series is open to the public and takes place two to three times a month. Cupertino Meeting Rooms Available for Public Use SCCLD makes community rooms and large meeting rooms available to organizations engaged in educational, cultural, intellectual, civic, or charitable activities. There are also small and medium rooms available for purposes of meetings, group study, discussion or projects. SCCLD is happy to announce Community Room 201 is now available in its full capacity Friday evenings and on weekends for patrons who would like to book library space. The room can fit up to 100 people. In addition, the subdivided side (201B) is available Monday-Thursday and Friday morning as a medium-sized meeting room, for up to 34 people.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) encourages residents to have a plan for how to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake. Cal OES is encouraging residents to take the time to update their emergency plans and to download the MyShake App. So many things in life may catch us off guard, but now, earthquakes don’t have to! Residents are encouraged to share this information with friends and family to help spread the word about the technology available to help keep them safe.
