Supporting Access to Information and Resources All this week the American Library Association is drawing attention to the continuing efforts to ban books at many libraries and schools. Most of the titles targeted touch on topics involving race, gender, sexual orientation, or sensitive political topics. This year's theme for Banned Books Week is "Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us." According to the ALA, "books reach across boundaries and build connections between readers. Censorship, on the other hand, creates barriers." SCCLD is committed to intellectual freedom with a diverse and extensive collection. All of the titles in ALA's Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2020 are available in our collection for patrons.

Preparing for Public Safety Power Shutoffs Wildfires can happen any time of year. When the weather forecast is so severe that people’s safety, lives, homes, and businesses may be in danger because of a wildfire, PG&E will initiate a Public Safety Power Shutoff. A PSPS means you could be without power for several days. Be prepared with these four steps! Sign up for alerts like AlertSCC, the County’s official warning system. Make a plan that includes evacuation routes, communication, etc. Build emergency supply kits that include Go Bags (when you have to evacuate) and a Stay Kit (when you shelter in place). When you are prepared, you are in a better position to help others. Talk to your friends, family and neighbors about being prepared also.
