Celebrating the Contributions of Hispanic Americans

National Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. It also commemorates the independence days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile. The celebration is observed from September 15-October 15.

Stop by one of our libraries to participate in the celebration! Children are invited to a special “Sprinkle of Spanish” storytime featuring the book, Paletero Man, by Lucky Diaz. After storytime, all participating children can enjoy their own sweet paleta (while supplies last)! See the schedule here. We have additional programs for children, teens, and adults scheduled. Take a look at our calendar.

Enjoy these booklists for kids: Picture books and Children’s Fiction and Nonfiction Books to celebrate NHHM. Find books, films, and music by Hispanic authors and artists. We also have a collection of eBooks and Audiobooks through our eResource, Overdrive. Stream videos from Hispanic directors, writers, and actors through our free service Kanopy, and explore the Hispanic Heritage catalog. We also invite you to try our Reading Challenge!

KIDS AND FAMILIES

Student eResources
All in One Place
SCCLD’s Student Portal is a one-stop shop for all of your child’s educational and entertainment needs. Find homework help, online tutoring and a number of eBooks, movies and music all in one place with resources for elementary, middle and high school students!

There’s also exclusive content just for students. Our librarians are always adding new blogs that feature some of our great resources, like National Geographic Kids, science experiments, and much more.

SCCLD is working with all of the K-12 public school districts within the Library District so every student has their own student eAccount, giving them direct access to the Student Portal.

Give it a try today and have a great school year!
Library Resource: ComicsPlus
Believe it or not – there are many benefits to reading comic books and graphic novels! According to Scholastic, comics and graphic novels can motivate reluctant readers, help children gain reading confidence, and can be great for children with learning disabilities. If a child speed-reads or skims pages, it can help them slow down by looking at the image and text to fully take in the story.

Use ComicsPlus by Library Pass to enjoy thousands of digital graphic novels and comics, available 24/7 on web-connected devices. Includes fiction and nonfiction, indie comics, Sunday funnies, and manga! Try it here.

TEENS AND ADULTS

Vote for the Best Books of 2023
Every year YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) creates a "teen choice" list of favorite books from the previous year, chosen by teen book groups from around the country. The teen librarians of Santa Clara County Library District want to hear from you too!

Ballots are available at each Santa Clara Count Library District location or you can vote by visiting our website.

Browse the online catalog or visit your local library to borrow or request titles from the list of nominees featured. There's no required reading - but the more you read, the better you'll know which books you want to vote for!
