Juneteenth Holiday The Juneteenth holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Word of the Emancipation Proclamation being issued in 1863 didn’t reach parts of Texas until two years later. It was on June 19, 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and declared all enslaved people to be freed.
All SCCLD libraries will be closed and services unavailable on Monday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. The Gilroy Library is hosting an early Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 10 at 2 p.m. Enjoy a performance from the Tabia African-American Theatre Ensemble that combines music, poetry, and dance. Please register. Walk-ins welcome as space allows.
