Looking Back at 2022

As we close the chapter on 2022, we cannot help but reflect on what a productive year it has been! We engaged our communities, offering popular programs such as Silicon Valley Reads, our Summer Reading program: Read Beyond the Beaten Path, and the Distinguished Author Series. We’ve hosted important and enlightening exhibits, from Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields, to HerStory2 and We Are Not Strangers Here.

We’ve also enriched the lives of patrons. We expanded our BookDash home delivery service, providing library service to our patrons who are unable to make it to the library because of health or disability issues. We have also created a new way to connect library patrons to key county services and more. Our new Community Outreach Specialist works with families out of the Milpitas Library and Ochoa Migrant Center in Gilroy.

Just this week, SCCLD was given a 5-Star rating in 2022 and named a Star Library for the fifteenth straight year by the Library Journal. Among the 5,359 public libraries reviewed, the 2022 Index of Public Library Service also ranks SCCLD second in the U.S. for library systems with budgets of more than $30 million. SCCLD moved from 5th in 2021 to 2nd in 2022.

The factors going into the rankings were library material checkouts, library visits, program attendance, website visits, and more. Our largest improvement from 2021 involved our Online Library. During the pandemic, SCCLD increased the number, variety, and provided easy accessibility to eBooks, eMagazines, eAudiobooks, databases, and other resources offered to patrons.

We thank you for your continued support and wish you Happy Holidays!

The Best Books, Music and Movies of the Year

Every December, our librarians compile the best books of the year. They go through more than two dozen sources, from trade publications to bestseller lists, popular blogs, and websites. Then they are put in order to find the most agreed upon titles.

Without further ado, the top fiction of 2022 was Trust by Hernán Díaz. The top nonfiction book of the year was a tie between
Constructing a Nervous System by Margo Jefferson and An Immense World by Ed Wong. Find the full list here and start putting holds on these titles fast!

Our Music and Movies Team also released its Best of 2022 recommendations. Make sure to check out the Best DVD/Blu-Ray Releases and Best Music.
