Kinder Readiness Resources Available Most children begin school in Santa Clara County when they are five years old. Whether or not your child has attended preschool or a school readiness program, you can prepare your soon-to-be kindergartner with our newly developed, librarian-approved resources, including contact information for local school districts. Spring Starts Next Week The Vernal Equinox happens on Sunday, March 20. This marks the first day of spring, when the days get longer and the temperatures get warmer. Celebrate St. Patrick's Day St. Patrick’s Day is on Thursday, March 17. While it is Ireland’s national holiday to honor its patron saint, the holiday is celebrated in other parts of the world as well. You may notice people wearing green, eating certain foods, having celebrations such as parades or parties. Create your own St. Patrick’s Day feast with these cookbooks available at the library. Find Mindfulness with Headspace Daylight Saving Time began this week. The days that follow “springing forward” can be stressful and exhausting, as people adjust their sleep schedules. Patrons are invited to try our free mindfulness app, Headspace. There are more than 1,000 hours of themed meditation sessions on everything from stress and sleep to focus and anxiety. There are also sleepcasts, which are in essence bedtime stories that are designed to create the right conditions for healthy, restful sleep. When you sign up for Headspace, your subscription lasts for the remainder of the month. On the last weekday of the month, all seats will be cleared. You’re welcome to re-enroll starting the first Monday of each month. All of your personal progress will be saved within your Headspace account.

Celebrate Women's History Month Join us for several free events centered around Women’s History Month. On Wednesday, March 23, local painter Sheryl Cathers will lead a virtual event: Paint Like Georgia O’Keeffe. Register for this Zoom event and find the supplies you’ll need here. Then, on Wednesday, March 30, learn about women pilots with Pat Gregory from the Santa Clara Valley 99s. She will discuss stories about women pilots, how she became interested in flying, and what it takes to be a pilot. Register here. Virtual Author Visit with Chef Bryant Terry Join us for a bonus Black History Month event on Tuesday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. Renowned for his activism in creating a healthy, just, and sustainable food system, Terry is the chef-in-residence at the Museum of African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco, where he creates programming that celebrates food, farming, health, activism, art, culture and the African Diaspora.

Virtual Author Visit: Wendy L. RouseWe are hosting a virtual author event on Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. SJSU Associate Professor of History, Wendy L. Rouse, will discuss her most recent work, Public Faces, Secret Lives: The Queer History of the Women’s Suffrage Movement. National Poison Prevention Weeks Starts March 20 According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, more than 90% of exposures reported to local poison control centers happen in the home. The third full week in March is National Poison Prevention Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness about poison control centers and the Poison Help Hotline (1-800-222-1222).
