Edwin B. Henderson II
Saturday, March 9 at 1 pm
Registration Required
Falls Church’s own Edwin B. Henderson II shares from his biography of his grandfather, Dr. E.B. Henderson. The Grandfather of Black Basketball: The Life and Times of Dr. E.B. Henderson gives long-overdue recognition to this sports pioneer, civil rights activist, author, and educator -- who was also the husband of Mary Ellen Henderson, our middle school's namesake. A founding member of what would become the first rural branch of the NAACP, Dr. E.B. Henderson also worked to ensure that our library would be open to Black citizens whose access had previously been limited. Copies of The Grandfather of Black Basketball will be available for sale on-site and a book signing will follow the author talk.

mrspl 125 logo A Look Back: 1910s
As we move along our historical timeline, we continue through the 1910s. Library operations were taken up by the Civic League, which later became the Falls Church Woman's Club. Black leaders in the community established the Colored Citizens Protective League and successfully sued to prevent a racially restrictive zoning ordinance from being enacted. The library changed locations several times throughout this decade. In 1919, the library moved to space in the former Congregational Church building on North Washington Street and Mary Riley Styles became Chairperson of the Library Committee of the Woman’s Club.

You'll find more photos from this decade in our Falls Church History Room and you can learn more about our library's history online. We hope you'll follow us on Instagram (@littlecitylibrary) and Facebook so you don't miss our #ThrowbackThursday posts! Please help us celebrate by using #mrspl125years if you're sharing anything library-related on social media.
