Happy May!

THERE'S A LOT GOING ON RIGHT NOW! And we have a lot to celebrate!

Welcome, Kerry!

You might have seen a new face at YPL! It belongs to none other than our new Assistant Director, Kerry Cronin! Kerry joins us most recently from Stratham, New Hampshire, and has worked at libraries big and small throughout her impressive career. Her first day was Monday, April 22, and she came back again this week, which is a very good sign. Come say "hello" and help us give Kerry a warm YPL welcome! In the meantime, read all about her on our Staff page.

We are a pet-loving folk. Let it be known that Kerry has a cat named Little Chino. Welcome, Kerry, and welcome, Little Chino.

Attention Citizen Scientists!

You may have noticed a new gadget by the pond. York Public Library is the proud new owner of a Chronolog, a tool that helps monitor ecosystems with the assistance of community members and passers-by. All you need is a cell phone, and you can contribute to a time-lapse that documents how the pond changes over time. Thanks to the bracket, camera shots are lined up perfectly every time! Read more about our awesome pond and the Chronolog! And next time you're here, take your first photo!

DEMOCRACY RULES!  Budget Committee, Select Board, and School Committee Office Hours at YPL

On Saturday, May 11, don't miss the chance to engage with representatives from York's key decision-making bodies—the Budget Committee, School Committee, and Select Board—at the York Public Library. They'll be on hand to answer any questions you have about the upcoming May 18 ballot. Whether you're looking for detailed explanations of proposed initiatives, want to understand budget allocations, or simply seek insight into the decision-making process, everyone is invited. This is your opportunity to get accurate information straight from the source, promoting transparency and enabling informed decisions.

Drop in anytime between 12:30 and 2:30 pm in the Wheeler Room. Your participation can help shape the future of our community, so mark your calendar and join us for this informative and welcoming session.

This is the final Irish Authors Book Group gathering with Ireland-based Deb McDermott, who says of We Don't Know Ourselves, "This is a non-fiction title.  O'Toole, who is 65, is a brilliant columnist for The Irish Times. In this book, he traces the history of Ireland during his lifetime. It began with vise-like Catholic control but would go on to include referendum-passed marriage equality and abortion laws. He's very readable."

 Wednesday, May 29

6:30 - 8:00 PM
Community Room

Author Mark C. Borton sits down with York Public Library at the end of this month to talk about his book, Moondoggle.

Was Franklin Roosevelt’s plan to use 26-foot-high tides in the western Bay of Fundy to generate electricity a “Moondoggle”— a wildly impractical scheme—as its critics claimed? Or was it visionary thinking and brilliant engineering—a clean source of perpetual power? Either way it was going to be the world’s biggest electric power plant. Until “Quoddy was killed.”
