Happy April!
We like April because it contains NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK! Libraries are cool, and April 7-13 is a time to visit your local library and celebrate the adventures and opportunities it unlocks! The theme for National Library Week 2024, “Ready, Set, Library!,” promotes the idea that in our always-online world, libraries give us a green light to something truly special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and focus on what matters most. No matter where you find yourself on the roadmap through life’s journey—preparing for a new career, launching a business, or raising a family—your library provides an inclusive and supportive community where everyone belongs.
April is also cool because there is an eclipse! On April 8, in York, at around 3:30 PM, 95.2% of the sun will be covered! Not in York? Find out how the eclipse will affect your location with this interactive Eclipse Explorer. Don't forget to BE SAFE! If you are using eclipse glasses, make sure they are ISO certified and purchased from a trusted vendor. Eclipse glasses can't be recycled, so keep them! Forever! Pass them down to future generations in your legal documents! For a sustainable alternative, click here to see NASA's video on how to build a Box Pinhole Projector, or pick up an instructional sheet at our front desk. And...cross your fingers we'll have good weather! 🌞
Lastly, April is cool because we have great programs this month! Read on or check out our upcoming events calendar. Please note the Library is closed on Monday, April 15, for Patriot's Day, and Friday, April 26, for a staff inservice day.
-YPL
P.S. We have an exciting new collection in our library that will be the talk of the Seacoast! Nay, THE WORLD! See our Facebook page for more information.

Rethinking Housing Wednesday, April 10
7 PM A Virtual Program
Access to affordable housing is a big challenge for low and middle income residents in our area, and York's Climate Action Plan tells us that single family homes are responsible for 46% of York's carbon emissions. This panel discussion will look at creative ways to solve both of these problems at the same time. Amber Harrison of York Community Services Association and Rozanna Patane of York Ready for Climate Action will talk about Accessory Dwelling Units, Cohousing and other solutions that make housing more accessible, and reduce the negative impact of housing on the climate. Documentary: WE ARE THE WARRIORS Saturday, April 6
1:00 - 3:00 PM Community Room
Recently aired on Maine Public Television!
We Are The Warriors reveals how difficult conversations about identity and history are key to addressing Native American mascots. The film’s Co-Directors, both graduates of Wells High School, gathered interviews and insights from residents of Wells and Wabanaki people from what is now Maine, Québec, and the Canadian Maritimes. Revelations about the town’s brutal colonial history and difficult conversations about the actual impact of the intended honor were key to changing hearts and minds of committee members.
Winner of the 2023 Maine International Film Festival’s Tourmaline Prize for best feature made in Maine.
