Like it or not, summer's almost over...
...and now we're back to our regularly scheduled programming.
There's nothing quite like September for a fresh start. Rather than hunkering down in the cold and turning inward in January, September and the start of the school year inspires a more outward, community-minded fresh slate.
We have a lot of returning programs: Storytime is back, as is our crafting group (not just knitters any more!) We also have important programs about housing, opioid prevention, and college essay writing. Not to mention plenty of fun things like a book talk from an author/musician about Ozark folk songs, and our kids' costume swap! Read on for all of the details, or stop by the library to check us out!
PS. We will be closed Saturday, Sept. 2 and Monday Sept. 4 for Labor Day. |

New Exhibit: York Art Featuring works by members of the York Art Association |
Opening Reception September 12, 5:00 - 7:00 PM
York Public Library has been hosting exhibits of area artists for many years, many of whom are established with art-school educations and a history of exhibiting in galleries and museums. The York Art Association, a gallery that has been showing local artists since the 1960s, has opened its walls not just to trained artists but also to amateurs. The current exhibition honors York Art Association members -- some are professional exhibitors, some are art teachers, and some engage art for the deep pleasure of making. Our community, and Maine overall, is enriched by a great number of artists at every skill level. In this exhibit you will have a chance to see that variety.

Music & Author Talk: Sarah Jane Nelson
Thursday, Sept. 28 7:00 PM Upper Level/Fireside |
Author and musical performer Sarah Jane Nelson spent almost a decade researching and writing about the life of Ozark ballad collector Max Hunter. How was it that a mid-century traveling salesman from Missouri managed to record such a vast number of singers with such a variety of songs? What effort did this entail? What motivated him to do this work, which Hunter himself always claimed was mostly a hobby? All big projects start with big questions and end with some new ones. Nelson will discuss her process of discovery as well as the ways in which Hunter’s life intersected with those of his ballad bearers, and throughout the program, she will sing songs from some of her favorite informants.
Sarah Jane Nelson is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who has been playing traditional music for folk festivals, New England contra dances, and other regional events for over a decade. She is an old-time fiddler, guitarist and vocalist. When she’s not playing, Sarah writes and teaches about traditional music.
