Happy Dinovember!
This month, Youth programming at YPL is chock full of all things dinosaur.🦕
While November's Adult programs regrettably do not center around Mesozoic friends, you are warmly invited to many equally spectacular Library events! Feast your eyes on Robert Shetterly's "Americans Who Tell the Truth" portraits---and your ears on live music inspired by the works of May Sarton. The November 18 performance of "Journey of Seasons" by Boston's Nightingale Vocal Ensemble will be enhanced thanks to a new collaboration with Surf Point Foundation: concert registrants are invited to tour the Wild Knoll Foundation Garden on the scenic grounds of May Sarton's last residence, now home to Surf Point.
We are thrilled to welcome back poet Tom Carnicelli, who will read from his latest collection, and York Diversity Forum's 1619 Project series continues with a look at incarceration in the United States.
We hope you'll join us!

Art Reception and Lecture with Robert Shetterly
Thursday, Nov. 2, 5:00 - 7:00 PM Upper Level
For more than 20 years Robert Shetterly has been painting the series of portraits Americans Who Tell the Truth. The portraits have given Shetterly an opportunity to speak about the necessity of dissent in a democracy, the obligations of citizenship, sustainability, US history, and how democracy cannot function if politicians don’t tell the truth, if the media don’t report it, and if the people don’t demand it. |

He has just published a book entitled "The Healing Connection," in which he makes the case for a strong partnership between patient and provider. He will provide an overview of his book, touching on a few major themes, and then will invite attendees to share their experiences and questions regarding healthcare today. Looking Outward
with Tom Carnicelli Tuesday, Nov. 14 7:00 PM Community Room
Tom Carnicelli will give a reading of poems from his latest collection, “Looking Outward.” This is Carnicelli's fourth poetry collection, and fourth reading hosted by York Public Library. In his first three collections, “Old Guy, Part One,” “Older Guy,” and “Older Still,” he focuses on his thoughts and feelings about old age and retirement. He still does some of that in the new collection, but he’s also shifted more of his attention to the world around him, to people, places, and things in the outside world. “After all,” he says, “I don’t want to end up writing ‘Poems from the Crypt.’” |

Seasons" uses the image of a garden as a metaphor for the self amidst life's seasons. In tandem with the performance, we will invite a modern poetry scholar to present on Sarton and her impact on 20th century American literature.
May Sarton lived the last twenty-two years of her life in York, Maine at her "house by the sea" she called Wild Knoll. Although she increasingly experienced multiple challenges during this time, her writing continued strong which resulted in several volumes of poetry and journals as well. Her last volume of poems "Coming Into Eighty" was published in 1994. May Sarton died in York, Maine, in July of 1995 at the age of 83. Read more about Wild Knoll HERE.
THOSE WHO REGISTER FOR THIS PROGRAM WILL RECEIVE A SPECIAL INVITATION TO VISIT THE Wild Knoll Foundation Garden BEFORE THE CONCERT, ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 11:30AM TO 12:30PM.
This gorgeous site alongside the ocean is only open to the public by appointment, so this is a unique opportunity. This is an optional activity available to program registrants only, but not a required part of the program. Thank you to Surf Point Foundation for offering this wonderful addition to the concert.
