Is spring coming? Or... maybe a second winter will surprise us? March in Maine is long. And unpredictable. And muddy. "You can't go around it, you've to go through it!" as children's songwriting legend Rick Charette famously sang. Or maybe semi-famously sang. You know you grew up in Maine if.... (Are you familiar with Rick Charette? Please weigh in.)
But luckily we have loads of interesting programs lined up this month!
DID YOU KNOW: More than six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and millions more find themselves in the role of caregiver for their loved ones suffering from the disease? Tomorrow (Saturday) at 1:00 PM, join us in watching Cycle of Memory, a moving film following filmmaker Alex Leff and his younger sibling Koby as they embark upon the same bike trip as their grandfather, who made the trip in 1945. Cycle of Memory’s intergenerational perspective expands our understanding of memory loss from a crisis facing the elderly to one that affects all ages. A discussion will follow.
Our 2024 Climate Series, Living in a Climate Changed World, continues with the 2nd Annual Climate Action Fair and the upcoming program "Rethinking Local Implementation." This March, we have two events perfect for celebrating St. Patrick's Day🍀 as well as an impressive lineup of Author Talks, both in-person and online. Save the date! On March 22, Paul Doiron will give YPL audiences a sneak peek at his book coming out in June.
Read on for complete details!
Muddily yours,
YPL

JEFF SNOW IN CONCERT: The Softer Side of Celtic
Friday, March 8 6:30 - 8:00 PM Community Room
Jeff Snow is a talented multi-instrumentalist who shares the music and the stories behind the music of Scotland, Ireland and England. Growing up in a home where old Scottish folk songs were the everyday sounds, Jeff developed an early love for Celtic music. Much of the history of these lands was preserved in song.
His music has often been described as "The Softer Side of Celtic." In concert, Jeff plays the guitar, autoharp and bouzouki. He can also find his way around a drum set and most of the percussion family. Jeff's music has been described as “quiet and relaxing.” Much of it is, but every once in a while he breaks out and the foot stomping begins.

Exceptional Irish Authors with Deborah McDermott
Thursday, March 14 2:00 - 3:30 PM A Virtual Program
Join us in celebrating St. Patrick's Day with an informative and lively presentation by Deborah McDermott. Since she arrived in Ireland more than three years ago, Deborah decided to immerse herself in modern-day Irish literature. Already a lifelong fan of the likes of Dubliners Roddy Doyle and Colum McCann, she was nonetheless stunned at the number of Irish authors who had not crossed her literary path before. She makes no claim to even a cursory knowledge of Irish writers - more are recommended to her seemingly every day. But she'd love to tell you about the novelists and non-fiction writers whose work she's read since coming to Ireland. Chances are you haven't heard of many of them, either! More is the pity, as the quality and scope of these books are truly second to none. So sharpen your pencils and join her as she recommends some of the best books she's read so far - and a few that are waiting in the wings.
