What is your favorite format for pumpkin? Are you a Pumpkin Spice Latte afficionado, or do you prefer your pumpkin in a traditional pie? Do you dislike the taste and prefer a well carved jack-o-lantern? Or do you abhor orange and avoid them entirely? These are some of the questions that October brings.
As usual, our events calendar is chock full of programs for all ages. Our costume swap is going strong, our Teen Advisory Group is returning, we're working with a number of community partners including York Land Trust, York Ready for Climate Action, York Diversity Forum, and Finding Our Voices, who supports and advocates for survivors of domestic abuse.
As always, we welcome your feedback, whether it be pumpkin preferences or program proposals. Orange you glad we're your library? |

Building Neighborhood, Making Meaning, and Collective Visioning Towards a More Resilient York.
This October, consider how we in York are collectively understanding climate change, and what our corresponding role is, together. Here we will practice resilience, cultivate hope, and explore the questions that ignite our imaginations and engage our moral fabric: What do we feel is the right thing to do amidst deep uncertainty? How can we cultivate a culture of care in our neighborhoods? What better world can we imagine together? |

Finding Our Voices:
Survivors Breaking the Silence of Domestic Abuse Tuesday, October 17 6:30 PM Community Room
This October, York Public Library is partnering with Finding Our Voices and other libraries in York County to promote awareness and resources for National Domestic Abuse Awareness Month. A panel of domestic abuse survivors will share their |
|
|
stories and then lead a community conversation centered around emotional abuse and the impact on children. Attention will be paid to how the abuse they transcended resonates with the universal tactics that abusers use to get and maintain control of the intimate partners they claim to love. This will be preceded by powerful short films on the topic. This presentation is part of the "Let’s Talk About It” tour to help end the stigma and shame that are key factors in keeping women and children trapped in domestic abuse.
Throughout the month of October, York Public Library will exhibit the Finding Our Voices posters featuring the photo portraits of 45 Maine domestic abuse survivors aged 18 to 83. The above photo to the left includes Maine survivors of domestic abuse and includes Finding Our Voices President/Founder Patrisha McLean and Janet Mills, Governor of Maine.
