Close your eyes. Picture the month of May. What does it make you think? For us, it's birthday cake season, Memorial Day parades, and baseball. We welcome kids home from college, swat at black flies, and relish the time to sit on the porch or open up a camp. And of course Mother's Day, and the return of bleeding hearts and hummingbirds.

This May, we are beyond excited about all of our programming. Birds, climate friendly lawn care, a spring concert, and more! As a culmination of our virtual climate series, we are having an IN-PERSON Sustainability Celebration. Stop by between 5:30-7pm on Wednesday, May 24 to sample some sustainably sourced snacks from our neighbors at the Sundrop Cafe, learn about the contribution of the food cycle to climate change, and celebrate the work that this community and York Public Library are taking.

And, of course, May brings us the launch of a fantastic new art exhibit, entitled Small Works, a collection of works from the Abstract Four: Barbara Adams, Peter Cady, Tom Glover, and Dustan Knight. Stop by the opening reception on Tuesday, May 9 from 5-7pm.

See you around the Library!

Author Talk:  Margot Anne Kelley
Tuesday, May 16 @ 7:00 PM

Community Room

In this illuminating alternative American history, Margot Anne Kelley details the evolution of food-centric utopian movements that were fueled by deep yearnings for unpolluted water and air, racial and gender equality, for peace, for a less consumerist lifestyle, for a sense of authenticity, for simplicity, for a healthy diet, and for a sustaining connection to the natural world.

Margot Anne Kelley holds a PhD in American Literature and an MFA in Media and Performing Arts. Kelley is the author of two books focused on people in relationship to the natural world, Local Treasures: Geocaching Across America and A Field Guide to Other People’s Trees. She taught at the college level for nearly twenty-five years. Since leaving academia, she served as the editor of The Maine Review and co-founded a community development corporation that runs a food pantry and community garden, among other programs. Kelley lives on the coast of downeast Maine.
