Something about summertime makes us feel crafty and creative. If that sounds like you, you'll be happy to hear that we are hosting a crafting series in July - Crafting for Grownups! Children and teens can't have all the fun. No one crafts better than our own Michele B, and she's lined up some excellent activities for all you creative-types out there.
Are you familiar with Plastic Free July? It's a community challenge designed to make us consider the vast quantity of plastics found in consumer products. It is overwhelming to know where to start, especially for an institution like the library, but in July we are taking two actions to reduce plastics. First, we are not adding plastic covers to our new paperback books. We hope this will not result in increased damage to our materials, and that we can permanently cut this plastic from our waste stream - as well as our budget. Please share any feedback you have if you borrow one of these newly not-covered books! Second, we have purchased compostable plastics for our incredibly popular Touch a Truck program later this month, where everyone can get a free shaved ice from Kona Ice. Nothing's better than an icy treat on a hot day! In the past, the event has generated many satisfied tummies but also a lot of unnecessary plastic waste. This time around, we're using a compostable product remcommeded to us by Mr. Fox Composting Services.
Feeling crafty? We have four "crafternoons" taking place this month in the Library's Upper Level. Spots are limited - register with the links below! Pictured: Painted Mandala Rocks
Linda Gerson's works will be on display in the Library from July 5 through August 30 during open hours. Between Now and Then will showcase contemporary abstract work in paint, collage, ink, pastel, and graphite. As a part-time Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Gerson finds inspiration in interactions with the natural world, in her dream life, and in psychotherapy with clients.
An Opening Reception for the exhibit will take place on Tuesday, July 11, from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Library’s Upper Level.
Want to take your writing in a new direction this summer? Stop by the Library once a week to try out a new prompt. You'll have twenty minutes to write, followed by a chance to share your work and listen to others. This informal group, hosted by Patty Hymanson, is open to all ages and light snacks will be provided. Please bring your choice of writing materials.
