PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Spring has finally arrived! Many of our sections have been busy planning events for spring. Longer days and warmer temperatures give us more energy for projects and the desire to be outside. Spring is a time of renewal. I have seen so many pretty photos on social media of gardens and flowers. I still obsessively remember my travels to Florence, Italy last fall.  I’m currently reading Under the Tuscan Sun and Bella Tuscany by Frances Mayes. You may have seen the movie based on that first novel, which chronicles Mayes’ spontaneous purchase of a house in Cortona, Italy, called Bramasole - something that yearns for the sun. Oh, how I yearn for the sun and the beauty of Italy!

One of my friends posted this equinox blessing and I wanted to share it with all of you.

A Spring Equinox Ostara Blessing

From its winter sleep the earth is awoken,
The cycle of nature, true and unbroken.
The promise of spring, of life, a new start,
To fill you with faith in mind, body and heart.
The perfect wheel of nature keeps spinning,
With proof that an ending is just the beginning.
Rejoice in this season, may it fill you with peace,
And may the blessing of nature, for you, never cease.

In this time of newness and renewal, we have a new committee! I have appointed Rodrigo Castro of Wake Forest University as chair for our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. The committee held its first meeting on March 25.  The State Library announced a new Racial Equity in Libraries toolkit which they developed in partnership with our own REMCo section. The new toolkit was released March 31, and we believe will be very useful to libraries across the state, as well as to our new DEI committee.  I look forward to learning and growing with this committee and seeing the fruits of their labor in the coming months.

During our Executive Board meeting on April 29, board members will have a business meeting followed by a session on self care led by our secretary, Jenneffer Sixkiller. As this is our second meeting of the new biennial, we are still getting to know each other and our new roles. We will take time for important conversations, brainstorming ideas and best practices for our board, continuing our focus on our individual health and the health of our organization.

Enjoy every day, take time for yourself, and take time to make connections with other NCLA members!

Until next time,

UPCOMING EVENTS

2022 DIGITAL HUMANITIES INSTITUTE
APRIL 21-22, 2022
hosted by UNC-CHARLOTTE

Conference Theme: Digital Humanities and the Environment

This year's Digital Humanities Collaborative of North Carolina Institute will be a hybrid two-day program taking place on April 21-22, 2022.

The theme of this institute is "Digital Humanities and the Environment". What do we mean by "environment"? You decide. It could refer to the natural world or the built environment. As presenters consider their proposals, they might consider the following questions: How can we address important issues of the environment through DH work? What are important considerations for ensuring DH work minimizes harm to the environment? How can we teach practitioners to consider the environmental impact of their DH work? How is industry incorporating the environment into DH products and solutions?

Call for Proposals! Metrolina Library Association is now accepting poster and presentation proposals for our 2022 conference, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 16, 2022, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. This year’s theme is “Renew ‘22: Centering Libraries and Librarians in Our Communities.”

2022 brings renewal and transformation. Over the last two years, librarians have needed to balance our own needs with the evolving needs of our communities.

We want to know: How can we enhance wellness and well-being for librarians? How can we better advocate for the critical role of libraries in creating healthy, thriving communities? How do we adapt to meet new challenges and changes?

Please fill out this short Google form to submit your proposal: https://forms.gle/k3pnoxajhGrZmRNh7

Questions? Contact Abby Moore MLA President, at Metrolina.library@gmail.com.  Proposals will be accepted until 5 p.m. EST, Monday, April 11, 2022. This is a blind review process.
