Dighton Public Library
April 2024
With spring finally here and April just around the corner, there is plenty to see and do at the Dighton Public Library. In addition to our weekly children's programs, Ms. Lorie has a full slate of fun activities planned in Youth Services during April vacation, including soap making, slime making, and even a puzzle day. Speaking of programs, be sure not to miss Dr. James Wadsworth, Professor of History at Stonehill College and author of Global Piracy: A Documentary History of Seaborne Banditry on April 25th as he discusses the history of piracy while doing some myth-busting along the way. Don't forget to save the date for live music by the acoustic folk-rock duo Knock on Wood when they come to Dighton on April 5th for a unique and entertaining show. We also have solar eclipse viewing glasses and COVID tests available while supplies last. Renovation work at our new library at Smith Memorial Hall continues with the help of Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School carpentry and electrical technology students.

Students enrolled in Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School's Carpentry Program and Electrical Technology Program were recognized at the town's March 13th Board of Selectmen's meeting for their work on the 207 Main Street Library renovations. The Selectmen and the Library Building Committee are grateful for the hard work of all the students who are contributing to the project, and are all excited at all the progress.

Solar Eclipse

Want to check out the solar eclipse on April 8th, but don't have any viewing glasses? Stop by the Library and grab a pair while supplies last.

Beneath the Skull and Crossbones: Piracy Myth and History
Pirates represent some of the most popular and yet least understood figures in history. Most people have very romantic notions of piracy and very little exposure to primary sources about piracy, often holding views that modern pirates are simple thugs and villains to be feared while Caribbean buccaneers were dignified social bandits. Join Dr. James Wadsworth, Professor of History at Stonehill College and author of Global Piracy: A Documentary History of Seaborne Banditry, on Thursday April 25th at 6:30 at Old Town Hall as he challenges these myths and situates pirates in their proper historical context.

Traveling Book Group
Join the Traveling Book Group and travel around the world through books. This month, the book club will unravel a mystery in Southern France while discussing The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell on Wednesday April 24th in the Children's Section located in the Lower Level of the Town Hall at 6:00. Copies of books are available at the library for anybody looking to take part in the group. The Traveling Book Group meets on the last Wednesday of each month, and anybody interested is welcome to attend.
