Heritage Museums and Gardens Did you know that the Mansfield Public Library has over 20 different museum passes that allow you to visit a variety of museums at a discounted price (or sometimes even for free!)? This month we’re focusing on the Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich, MA, which includes 100 acres of beautiful gardens and trails, 3 museums, a treehouse, antique automobiles, a working vintage carousel, and a Wampanoag wetu, so there’s something for everyone! This specific museum pass admits up to 6 individuals at half of the regular general admission price of $21 for adults and $11 for youth ages 3-17, so with the pass your prices will be $10.50 for adults and $5.50 for youth. Kids aged 2 and under are always free. If you would like to borrow this pass, just follow these steps: 1) With your Mansfield library card, reserve the pass online here. 2) Call the MPL at 508-261-7380 to obtain the discount code you will need to use when you book your tickets online before your visit. (Please note: there is no physical pass to pick up at the library for this museum.) 4) Select the day that you have booked the pass for. 5) Order your tickets. (Upon checkout, use the library discount code). 6) You will get a confirmation e-mail that will include your e-tickets; either print them out or have them on your phone. College Admissions Program for High School JuniorsTuesday, May 17th 7:00-8:00PMRon Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out for College, LLC., are offering a Zoom presentation to help high school juniors and their parents understand how to use the summer productively to create a compelling college application.
They will cover the college application process including current admissions trends, writing the personal statement essay and supplemental essays, teacher recommendations and how students can position themselves to increase their chances for admission. They will discuss application strategies including the advantages and disadvantages of early decision, early action and regular decision. We’ll also review what factors students should consider in deciding whether or not to submit their standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) for test-optional colleges and universities. They will also examine the holistic admissions review process, what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission. Lastly, they will discuss the importance of community service, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and an opportunity to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers place great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others. This program is a detailed and strategic overview of what students should focus on to make their college applications compelling. A Garden Walk With Eleanor Roosevelt Tuesday, May 24th 6:30-7:30PM Meeting RoomAs part of the Books in Bloom month-long event, the Mansfield Public Library is so happy to welcome educator and historian Carol Cohen for her IN-PERSON program, A Garden Walk With Eleanor Roosevelt.
It is the summer of 1949. Eleanor Roosevelt is hosting a garden picnic at her home in Hyde Park where she is recognizing contributions to the Victory Garden effort during World War. The interactive program includes both first person portrayal and lecture. Following an “up close visit” with Eleanor participants will learn about Victory Gardens past, present and future via an informative, visually enhanced PowerPoint lecture. Carol Cohen has spent her life dedicated to teaching and learning. Carol is on the faculty of Lesley University Graduate School of Education where she teaches Social Studies Methods, Literacy and Practicum Seminar. Carol offers Professional Development Workshops and Tours as well as lectures for children and adults. In Carol’s popular “An Evening with Eleanor Roosevelt” presentation she uses a combination of portray and primary sources to give audiences a glimpse into the life of the First Lady of the World. With her educational consulting company Now Voyager Education she presents In-School field trips in elementary and middle schools throughout New England, New York and New Jersey. Although history and geography is her Carol’s area of expertise, theater is her passion. Carol is a firm believer that learning at any age is greatly enhanced through the arts. She utilizes her over three decades working in theater to make all of her courses, workshops and lectures come alive. Carol, a native New Yorker, has made her Massachusetts her home for the past 40 years. Her sons Ben and Lee are constantly teaching her about life and learning. This program is free and open to all. Lotus Lantern Virtual Workshop (Ages 13 and up) Thursday, May 26th, 6:30-7:30PM Zoom Meeting Room REGISTRATION OPENS MAY 2ND! As part of our Books in Bloom month-long event, The Mansfield Public Library is excited to virtually host the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project (KSCPP), who will teach participants step by step how making a lovely lotus flower lantern using colored paper and a pre-made wireframe. At the same time, the participants will learn about Korea’s unique history and culture. A short documentary film is played toward the end of the class. SPACE IS VERY LIMITED! 1 kit per registration.
