Family Meals: A Color Story

Flora T. Little Art Gallery August Artist

Join artist Korie Ellis (@fallingofftrees) for the opening reception of her show Family Meals: A Color Story.

This exhibit acts as a very special documentation of family meals, honoring all of the time spent preparing, cooking, and enjoying the time we get to sit together. All dyes were created from left over food items such as avocados, onion skins, pomegranates, and tea bags. With 3 small children and very busy schedules, I would not be able to enjoy my life nearly as much without the support of my partner, and the family members who offer their helping hands. My way of showing thanks has always been through cooking healthy food and nourishing those whom I love. Creating color and transferring it onto cloth will keep these moments alive, out of the trash, and act as a showcase of my undying love and deep appreciation for it all.

Korie Ellis is a Natural Dyer based in New Bedford, MA. She has spent her last few years diving into the realm of creating natural color on textiles derived from kitchen scraps, flowers, and plant matter. Most of the materials used are scraps she cooks with, dye plants grown in her garden, or plant donations that friends and family leave on her doorstep. Her education consists of experimentation, reading books on natural dyes, and taking workshops from other dyers. With the ideology of "make of the most of what's around" she focuses much of her dyeing on using what is typically found to be waste, and transforming it into color that lasts through proper pretreatment and the intersection of art and science. Textiles provide her a way of documenting color as moments in time, preserving a special memory, and honoring the aging process that connects us to the natural world.
