Pembroke Public Library Newsletter May 2023

Visit the Library Meeting Room on Saturday, May 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to buy some bargain books and tasty treats! All proceeds go to the Friends of the Pembroke Public Library and are used to fund "extras" for the library including discounted museum passes, bestsellers, items for our Library of Things, and programs for all ages.

Monday Movie Matinee: Spoiler Alert Monday, May 1st at 1:30 p.m. The story of Michael Ausiello and Kit Cowan's relationship, which takes a tragic turn when Cowan is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Starring Jim Parsons, Ben Aldridge, and Sally Field. 112 minutes. Rated PG-13.

Pembroke Public Library Book Club Tuesday, May 2nd from 6:30-7:30 p.m. For our May meeting the PPL Book Club is reading The Measure by Nikki Erlick, which tells the story of the dawn of a new world through eight ordinary people with one extraordinary choice. Yoga Every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Led by Barbara Ward and other instructors from the YogaConnection of Plymouth. Open to all levels. A single-class drop-in is $12 and a four-class registration is $45 ($35 for Friends members). Friends members can also purchase an eight-class punch ticket for $80, which is valid for three months.

Genealogy Night Tuesday, May 30th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Are you interested in finding out more about your genealogy? Do you have a cool story about one of your ancestors you want to share? Join in our monthly Genealogy Night to chat with other family history buffs! All are welcome to attend, from experienced researchers who would like to share tips or stories about great finds, to beginners who want to learn more about the research process and online resources. Library laptops will be available to explore Ancestry Library Edition.

Pembroke Public Library Book Club Tuesday, June 6th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. For our June meeting the PPL Book Club is reading Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, "a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope that traces a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus." Storytime Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Toddlers (ages 2-5) and their caregivers can enjoy an interactive storytime with songs, dances, games, and stories that encourage language development and social skills. Each themed storytime is followed by a craft.

Baby Lapsit Thursdays May 4th, 18th, and 25th from 10:30-11:00 a.m. Designed for babies and toddlers from 6 to 24 months, Lapsits are a great chance for caregivers to bond with their child while learning new rhymes and stories to share. Each program includes stretches, music, a story, and more followed by an open play time.

LEGO Club Tuesday, May 9th from 4-5 p.m. Kids ages 5+ are welcome to visit and build with the library LEGOs. Bring your neighbors, big siblings, and school friends! LEGO Club is designed to give kids a safe, creative environment in which they can freely build with LEGOs, interact with peers, and express themselves. This month's theme is "Race Around the World."

Little Music Makers Thursday, May 11th from 10:30-11:00 a.m. Enhance your little one’s love of music during this 30-minute bonding time, with songs, dance, and movement games to excite one’s budding musician. Babies and toddlers ages 0-2 with a caregiver are welcome to drop in and join us!

Anime Club Thursday, May 11th from 4-6 p.m. Ages 11-15 are invited to watch anime, snack, craft, and socialize. This month, watch Kiki's Delivery Service (rated G, 105 minutes) and craft a mini broomstick. This is a drop-in event; no registration is needed.

Chess Club Wednesday, May 17th from 4-5 p.m. Chess Club will now be hosted every third Wednesday of the month. All ages* & skill levels can learn and play chess at the library. Whether you have been playing for years or want to start playing for the first time, you’re welcome to join us. This is a drop-in event; no registration is needed. *Children under age 8 must be accompanied by someone over age 13 at all times.

Puppy Dog Tales Thursday, May 18th from 4:15-5:00 p.m. Readers of all ages may read to a certified therapy dog to develop their literacy and presentation skills as well as build confidence and self-esteem. Our dogs and trainers provide a supportive environment to practice reading aloud. This is a drop-in event.

Hatch-a-Chicken: The Wait Begins! Wednesday, May 31st Peep! Peep! The Library is getting chicken eggs! Starting on May 31st, the Children's Room will be the new home to chicken eggs as they wait to hatch in their incubator. Our chicks will be ready to say "hello" to the world around June 21st. Stop by anytime during our regular open hours to observe the eggs and the hatching process. This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Pembroke Public Library.
