Staff Pick

This week's pick comes from Brian and is available as both an eBook and audiobook in our OverDrive and Libby collection. Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan tells the story of Robert Louis Stevenson's marriage from the point of view of his wife, Fanny. Brian says: "I got so caught up in the details of their life as recounted in the novel and based on historical fact. He was Scottish, Fanny was American and they lived in many places in the world including England, America, and the Pacific Islands. The details of their trials and tribulations, sickness, money problems, the good and bad of relationships with friends and with each other were all spelled out in rich detail. I got so caught up that I actually felt sorrow at Stevenson’s death in 1894 at the age of 44."

Getting stuck while doing research can be frustrating, but there are a few simple things you can try to help get yourself back on track. If you’re having a hard time finding a specific person you can try tweaking the spelling of their name. Most census takers in the past were not very precise. They would sometimes spell a first or last name based on how it sounded to them. For example the name Henderson could come up under Hendersen or even Handerson. Get creative with some spellings and see what kind of doors it opens; it could be the key to getting you out of your jam!

Karen's Drop Biscuits
This is a great simple biscuit recipe. It goes great with soups and stews. The dough can either be dropped into the soup or stew and become dumplings or baked on a cookie sheet in the oven for a regular biscuit.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups flour
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
1 egg
3 tablespoons butter (melted)

Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F (if baking in oven)
Mix flour, baking powder, salt & sugar. Make a "well" (a hole in the center of the dry mixture) and pour in milk, egg & melted butter (I like to mix these together before I pour it in). Mix until smooth.
For dumplings, drop by tablespoon into soup and cover, until the dough looks solid. You may need to gently flip them to cook both sides.
For oven biscuits, drop by tablespoon onto cookie sheet (either greased, or I prefer to use parchment paper). They don't need a lot of space, as they don't rise much. I can usually fit 8 per cookie sheet. Bake for about 8 minutes, or until golden brown on bottom.

Sometimes for a little extra treat, I will drizzle honey on top before I put them in the oven (you could always do that after they are baked as well). I have also tried adding Parmesan cheese to the batter, and that was delicious too. The great thing about starting with a real basic recipe is it gives you a lot of room to play with it and try different additions that suit your personal taste!

Stay safe, everyone! We will see you soon.
