Pembroke Public Library Online Newsletter
May 5, 2020

While the library is closed, we want to stay in touch with our wonderful library community and continue to share reading suggestions and ideas about fun and educational activities for all ages to do at home. Newsletters will come out every Tuesday. You can unsubscribe at any time from the “Manage Subscriptions or Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of each newsletter. This is a collaborative effort of the Pembroke Public Library staff.

With Your Pembroke Public Library Card You Can...
...find your next great read!
Stuck on what to read next? Try NoveList Plus! This online resource helps match readers with books that are just right for them. NoveList lets you search for books, authors, or series that you have enjoyed and provides a list of "readalike" recommendations. You can also explore various genres, styles, and appeal terms.
Around the Internet: Printables!
Coloring Pages
Plenty of us still have our markers, gel pens, coloring pencils, and more from a few years ago when adult coloring books were at every gift exchange and spread across dining room tables. This is still a great way to relax and get creative, so dig out your supplies and try your hand at a few new line art pages!
Rain & Rainbows Board Game
This board game is a new take on the Snakes & Ladders game. Rainbows take you up to higher numbers (like ladders) and black clouds and rain bring you back down to lower numbers (like snakes). Got it? Try chasing the rainbows without getting soaking wet in the rain!
Family Screen Time
When media is used thoughtfully and appropriately it can enhance daily life, but when used too much it can displace many important activities such as face-to-face interaction, outdoor play, and sleep. Create a media plan that's right for your family with either a simple printable or an interactive form from the American Academy for Pediatrics.
At-Home STEAM Activities

Behind the Scenes with Library Staff
Although the library building is closed, staff are busy working from home on different projects both for our current virtual library and for when the building opens back up. One of our biggest new adventures has been virtual programming over Zoom and Facebook. This is very different from the way we're used to running programs, but we've been adjusting to this virtual world and enjoying the learning experience!

Roz took the leap as our first Zoom presenter with her April workshops on Emily Dickinson and Edna St. Vincent Millay. With the success of those programs, we're now working on translating some of our regular in-person programs to a Zoom environment, as well as creating some new ones - stay tuned for information on a language group that Brian is creating! Over on our Facebook page, Miss Melissa does a weekly storytime video; this month she will be doing pajama storytimes! Stephanie has started a PPL Virtual Book Club group and Laura is running a virtual cookbook club for both seasoned and budding chefs to share photos and recipes.

You can stay updated on all our upcoming events by checking our website and Facebook page!

Reader's Corner
While the library building is closed, our digital branch is always open! Our OverDrive/Libby and hoopla collections have thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines that you can check out with your library card. All books featured in this newsletter are available as eBooks in our collection. Borrow and read items online at sails.overdrive.com or by downloading the Libby app to your device. (If you are unfamiliar with the Libby app, click here for a guide on how to get started reading with Libby on your device.)

Virtual Book Club

The next selection for our virtual book club is The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton (available for instant download on hoopla), a murder mystery in which one man must live the same day over and over until he identifies the killer. Be sure to join our Virtual Book Club Facebook group if you would like to participate! Discussion will open on June 1st. We will also be holding a Zoom discussion during the first week of June (date and time TBD); if you're interested in participating, please email Stephanie at smcbain@sailsinc.org.
Staff Pick

For fans of fantasy and magic Karen suggests The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, the start of an epic story about a notorious wizard. Karen says: "This incredible fantasy book was recommended to me by my nephew. The story is very well written, a real page turner. It is part of a trilogy, although the third book has yet to be written. The whole story takes place over the course of three days, however it has a story within a story as the wizard tells of his past and how he came to be where he is. There is magic, mayhem, love, adventure, a little bit of everything you would expect in a fantastical story. I do warn you, if you decide to take on this series, you need to have patience - we don’t yet know when the third book will come out. There are however a few short stories to be found with some of the side characters, should you need more in the meantime! This book, the second (The Wise Man’s Fear) and one of the side stories (The Slow Regard of Silent Things) are all available on Libby/Overdrive!"

Book to Movie

The Rainmaker
Read the book on OverDrive/Libby, then watch the movie on hoopla! Rudy Baylor is a rookie lawyer in over his head on a high-profile case. Opposing him: an army of legal sharks. On Rudy's side: Deck Shifflet, a feisty "paralawyer" who specializes in flunking the bar exam. Click here to borrow the book and here to borrow the movie.
Meet Our Online Magazines

Our OverDrive collection includes magazines that can be checked out at any time, with no holds or waits! Today's featured magazine is Good Housekeeping; one of our newer subscriptions, there are issues available starting from this January. The May 2020 issue features spring style trends, GH experts' recommendations for the best new beauty products, ideas for budget-friendly home makeovers, and letters from celebrities to their mothers in honor of Mother's Day. You can explore all our online magazines here.
Online Reads for Kids & Teens

Junior Library Guild Digital is a book provider for youth libraries; they're currently offering free access to eBooks for elementary, middle, and high school students! Visit their page to download the app or to log on to their desktop shelves.
Storytime

All of the libraries in the SAILS library system are working hard to bring you entertaining and educational content. Miss Melissa has been performing weekly storytimes but she's not the only one! In Boyden Library's Bedtime Story, Miss Kacee has some silly book readings including Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andrea (featuring a stuffed giraffe!)
Genealogy Tip
While the library is closed, Ancestry Library Edition is available for all Pembroke card holders to access from home using this link. Sign in with your library card number and PIN (the last 4 digits of your phone number), then click on Ancestry Library Edition.

Staying organized while doing genealogical research can be tricky, especially if you are using the library edition of Ancestry.com and you can’t save information to a family tree while you work. However, there are a lot of other free online family tree resources you can use to organize your findings. My Heritage and Family Search offer online tools that make it easy to input information and stay organized. Being able to visualize the connections between you and your ancestors is an exciting step in doing your own genealogy and it makes it easy to share your results with your family.
Stay safe, everyone! We will see you soon.
