No-Good Dirty Rats, Femme Fatales, and Tough Guys: The Gangster Picture and Film Noir Wednesday, February 7th at 6:30 p.m. Come join Frank Mandosa as he gives a fascinating retrospective talk on the history and context of the gangster picture and film noir. His talk includes interactive trivia, photo displays, and free handouts for the attendees, as well as a free raffle for a chance to win movie-themed door prizes. Amidst the grim, bleak years of the Great Depression, the popularity of motion pictures exploded with dazzling musicals, melodramas, and slapstick antics. But one genre touched a raw nerve in moviegoers who got vicarious thrills by watching bank robbers and bootleggers "stick it to the man" and defy the system: the gangster picture! And once the U.S. entered WWII, these crime films with storylines ripped straight from the headlines gave way to a new kind of dark thriller: film noir, a highly stylized and dramatic genre of stories about disillusionment, malaise, and desperate grabs for the so-called American Dream.

Hello Stranger by Katherine CenterSadie Montgomery never saw what was coming. One minute she’s celebrating the biggest achievement of her life, placing as a finalist in the North American Portrait Society competition, and the next she’s lying in a hospital bed diagnosed with “probably temporary” face blindness. She can still see, but every face she looks at is now a jumbled puzzle of disconnected features. As she struggles to cope, hang on to her artistic dream, work through major family issues, and take care of her beloved dog, Peanut, she falls in love—not with one man but two. If here life were a little more in focus, she might be able to find her way, but perceiving anything clearly feels impossible. Luckily for her, there are things we can only find when we aren't looking, people who only show up when we least expect them, and there are always, always other ways of seeing.
