This month our recommendation comes from Perry, who enjoyed the "part Sci-Fi, part mystery" Area X: The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. This is a compilation of VanderMeer's three Southern Reach novels: Annihilation, Authority, and Acceptance. The series focuses on Area X, a remote and mysterious place cut off from the rest of the continent, and the secret Southern Reach agency that monitors expeditions sent there – expeditions that keep turning out disastrously. Perry says: "It drags you in and keeps you guessing the whole way through. I recommend the audiobook versions, the narrators make the story even more compelling." If you're a fan of the books, be sure to check out the movie version of Annihilation, which was released last year and stars Natalie Portman.

Did you know that the Young Adult Room at the Pembroke Public Library has a magazine section, too? Available to all, but recommended for our YA patrons, this section includes a publication you may recognize, the iconic MAD magazine. MAD magazine was created in 1952 and originally released as a comic book. Now nearly 70 years later, the publication is still going strong, poking fun at anything and everything it can find! Recurring features include Spy vs. Spy, the Fold-in, the MAD Look at, television and movie parodies, and the grinning mascot Alfred E. Neuman. The April 2019 issue specifically roasts recent movies Aquaman and Mary Poppins and the TV show The Good Place. So come grab a magazine and relax on one of our new comfy YA lounge chairs! Or, even better, join our annual Summer Reading program (sign-ups begin June 17th) and grab a magazine, or book, or both! Happy reading!
