Library Hours of Operation:
Monday - Thursday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Friday - Saturday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Sunday: 12 p.m. - 4. p.m. (beginning October 15th)
 
The library will be closed Monday, October 9th for Columbus Day
(Also celebrated as Indigenous Peoples' Day) 
 
Library News
Halloween BOO-Tacular
Thursday, October 26 from 4:30-5:30pm
All ages can visit the Library and the Council on Aging for a special event of treats (no tricks!). Both locations will have treats/candy and activities including Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin and a Zombie Obstacle Course. This event is free and open to all youth; costumes are encouraged but not required. Non-food treats will be available.
Sundays Return
Pembroke Public Library will once again be opening on Sundays, starting from October 15th.
 
Our Sunday hours are Noon to 4 p.m.
 
Basket Raffle
October 1 to October 28
The Friends of the Pembroke Library Annual Basket Raffle begins on October 1st and ends with a Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, October 28th.  Donations of baskets are  welcome. 
 
Volunteer Opportunity for Middle and Highschool Students
Thursday, October 26 from 4:00-6:00pm
Bring joy to dozens of Pembroke kids by helping at the Library's BOO-tacular! We need volunteers for face painting, simple games, crafting, and trick-or-treat stations. If you're interested in assisting, please complete a BOO-tacular Volunteer Form and return it by Thursday, October 19th.

Monday, October 2nd at 1:30 p.m.
Ria Khan believes she must save her older sister Lena from her impending marriage. Pembroke Public Library Book Club
Tuesday, October 3rd from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
For our October meeting the PPL Book Club is reading Hester by Laurie Lico Albanese, "a vivid reimagining of the woman who inspired Hester Prynne, the tragic heroine of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, and a journey into the enduring legacy of New England's witchcraft trials." Yoga
Every Wednesday at 10 a.m.
Yoga is coming back to the Pembroke Public Library for its 31st year! Led by Barbara Ward and other instructors from the YogaConnection of Plymouth, yoga is gentle, mindful, and open to all levels and any body! The oldest student is 92 and has been attending since the program started! 
 
A single-class drop-in is $12 and a four-class registration is $45 ($35 for Friends members). Friends members can also purchase an eight-class punch ticket for $80, which is valid for three months. Feel free to reach out to Barbara at 508-269-5780 if you have any questions!

GBPA Presents: The Basics of Ghost Hunting
Thursday, October 19th at 6:30 p.m.
Come join members of the Greater Boston Paranormal Associates as they talk about their methods and the equipment they use on their hunts.
 
The team consists of both believers and skeptics and uses methods that are both technical and spiritual. They believe that only by approaching the paranormal with hearts and minds that are open to all possibilities is there any hope of finding answers to questions that have been asked for centuries.
 
All Attendees have a chance to win two tickets to a Paranormal Investigation aboard the USS Salem in April, 2024. You must be 18 years or older, and present, to claim the tickets.

Genealogy Night
Monday, October 30th from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Genealogy will be meeting on Monday in October only.

Join in our monthly Genealogy Night to chat with other family history buffs! All are welcome to attend, from experienced researchers who would like to share tips or stories about great finds, to beginners who want to learn more about the research process and online resources. Library laptops will be available to explore Ancestry Library Edition.
Myths and Miracles of Victorian Medicine
Thursday, November 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
Join us on this exploration of practices that defy today’s medical sense and discoveries that helped form the foundation of 21st-century medicine. Learn about topics that include disease prevention; homemade medicines and patented “remedies”; pregnancy protocols; Dr Elizabeth Blackwell and scientific discoveries that formed the roots of medicine in 2023.
 
Prepare to gasp, cringe, and chuckle, as you discover the horrifying practices and milestone discoveries that characterize turn–of-the-century medicine! Proper Victorian lady Miss Myrtle Mills (Portrayed by Janet Parnes of Historical Portrayals by Lady J) will reveal its primitive nature as well as life-saving advancements.

October Teen Take-And-Make: Zombie Clothespins
Available beginning October 2nd while supplies last
We know teens are busy with school, work, chores, and more so we're giving you an opportunity to craft on your own time. Pick up a Craft Kit in the YA Lounge and create a zombie clothespin.
Storytime
Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
Toddlers (ages 2-5) and their caregivers can enjoy an interactive storytime with songs, dances, games, and stories that encourage language development and social skills. Each themed storytime is followed by a craft.
Baby Lapsit
Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
Designed for babies and toddlers from 6 to 24 months, Lapsits are a great chance for caregivers to bond with their child while learning new rhymes and stories to share. Each program includes stretches, music, a story, and more followed by an open play time.
LEGO Club
Tuesday, October 10th from 4-5 p.m.
Kids ages 5+ are welcome to visit and build with the library LEGOs. Bring your neighbors, big siblings, and school friends! LEGO Club is designed to give kids a safe, creative environment in which they can freely build with LEGOs, interact with peers, and express themselves. This month's theme is "Creature Alert"
Witch's Story Time
Wednesday, October 11 from 4:00-5:00pm
Ages 4-8 can join Miss Kiki in a bewitching storytime "At the Old Haunted House" by Helen Ketteman. Kids will then get to craft ghostly pom pom poppers. Registration required; click/tap this link or call 781-293-6771 to sign up.
Anime Club
Thursday, October 12th from 4-5 p.m.
Ages 11 - 15 are invited to watch anime, snack, craft and socialize. This month attendees will watch episodes from Demon Slayer (Rated TV-14) and decorate "Warding Masks." This is a drop-in event; no registration is needed.

ASL Hour
Tuesday, October 17 from 4:00-5:00pm
Ages 12-14 will learn words and phrases in American Sign Language through games and conversation with a special guest who was born deaf and uses ASL to communicate. Registration required; click/tap this link or call 781-293-6771 to sign up.
Chess Club
Wednesday, October 18th from 4-5 p.m. 
All ages* and skill levels can learn and play chess at the library. Whether you have been playing for years or want to start playing for the first time, you’re welcome to join us. This is a drop-in event; no registration is needed. *Children under age 8 must be accompanied by someone over age 13 at all times.
Puppy Dog Tales
Thursday, October 19th from 4:15-5:00 p.m.
Readers of all ages may read to a certified therapy dog to develop their literacy and presentation skills as well as build confidence and self-esteem. Our dogs and trainers provide a supportive environment to practice reading aloud. This is a drop-in event.
