With Your Pembroke Public Library Card You Can...
...perfect your baking skills!
One great way to pass the time indoors is to indulge in a sweet new art project! Hand-painting is a unique style of decorating cakes that makes it easy to add your personal touch. Our online resource Creativebug has a wide variety of classes that will teach you how to bake, ice, and paint your cake. One of our librarians began cake painting last fall and continues to use her free time to experiment in her kitchen - check out her painted cake on the left! Here are a couple of Creativebug series she recommends: Painting on Cookies and Cakes and Mastering Buttercream. Log in with your Pembroke Public Library card to get started!

At-Home STEAM Activities
Exploring Shadows
http://www.peepandthebigwideworld.com/en/parents/activities/111/tracing-shadows/
Get some fresh air and explore shadows! Trace each other’s shadows on pavement (or paper) with chalk. If you come back to that space later in the day and trace the shadows again (remember to mark where to stand), what do you notice? You can also use toy animals, blocks, or any other objects. Create a dinosaur parade and trace their shadows! Use the back of old wrapping paper and crayons or markers to create new personalized wrapping paper for your next celebration!
Learn About Sharks
https://www.ocearch.org/
Use Global Shark Tracker to learn about where great white sharks hang out and why. Can you find Grizz? Fitzy? Fletcher? What about Emily the sea turtle? Are there any sharks near Honduras? Puerto Rico?

Staff Pick

This week, Roz has two suggestions for fans of nonfiction: The American Spirit and Brave Companions, both by David McCullough. She says: “If you are a fan of Pulitzer Prize-winning McCullough’s longer works such as 1776 or John Adams, these collections won’t disappoint. If you have not read McCullough, but are looking for short and inspiring reads, these will fit the bill. The American Spirit is a brief collection of McCullough’s speeches. Each evokes what unites rather than divides us as a nation. Brave Companions: Portraits in History highlights the inspiring accomplishments of some celebrated Americans such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and the Lindberghs as well as lesser known, but no less accomplished, representatives of the American spirit.”
