With Your Pembroke Public Library Card You Can...
...explore your family history!
While the library is closed, Ancestry Library Edition (usually only available on library computers) will be free for all Pembroke patrons to access from home! If you're curious about your genealogy, now is a great time to explore. Ancestry Library Edition provides access to all U.S. and international records available on Ancestry.com. Sign in here with your library card number and PIN (the last 4 digits of your phone number), then click on "Ancestry Library Edition." Please note that Library Edition does not have family tree capability, but when a record is open you can click the "save" link to either save it to your computer or send it to your email. If you're just getting started, Ancestry support provides some tips for searching and finding records.

At-Home STEAM Activities
LEGO Challenge Cards
https://thestemlaboratory.com/lego-challenge-cards
Are you up for the challenge? Build something that flies. Build your favorite fruit and see if someone can guess it. Make a pattern. Fill a rectangle with Legos without going over the edges. You can print these challenges (and more) or just write them out and explore!
Toy Freeze
https://theimaginationtree.com/freezing-and-melting-objects-in-ice/
On the next warm day (or even if it’s not), try this cool activity! Gather toys and containers of all sizes. In each container, add water (food coloring optional) and toys, then freeze. If you have more time, you can even do this in steps and create layers! Once they’re frozen, pop the blocks into the sink, a big storage tub, or even on the driveway. Add water, salt, and age-appropriate tools, then work together to excavate the toys!

Virtual Book Club

We're excited to announce the new Pembroke Public Library Virtual Book Club! Our first selection is The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson (available for instant download on hoopla), historical fiction based on the true stories of the Kentucky Pack Horse librarians of the 1930s and the blue-skinned people of Kentucky. Be sure to join our Virtual Book Club Facebook group if you would like to participate! Discussion will open on April 30th, and our next book will be announced on May 4th.
Staff Pick

Today's pick comes from our mystery-lover Carly, who recently read and loved Long Bright River by Liz Moore. She says: "It was a well-crafted mystery that had me guessing until the very end. The story takes place in Philadelphia in present day. The main character is a police officer who is investigating a series of murders while also searching for her sister who has gone missing. If you enjoy mysteries, add Long Bright River to your To Be Read pile!"

Staff Stuff
Stress Relief Idea

While we're at home, staff have been trying out new activities to help relieve stress and will share some of our favorites each week. Mary has taken up yoga and highly recommends the YouTube channel Yoga with Adriene. She says: "This is a great resource. It has yoga workouts for all different abilities - and in some of the workouts she has her dog! I am a novice yogi but I really enjoy it!"
Miss Melissa's Easy Butterbeer Recipe
The shelves are emptying and you want to get something special for your kids (or yourself) for movie night. What to do? Grab some ingredients for the classic Wizarding World drink, butterbeer. Because these ingredients are often overlooked, they could still be in stock!

Read the entire recipe before shopping so you can predict how much cream soda you will need for your young witches and wizards.

You will need any amount of:
Cream soda (chill in fridge, if possible)
Butter extract
Caramel extract (optional)
Whipped Cream
Vanilla Wafers (optional)
Ice (optional)

1) Pour servings of the cream soda out into glasses. (However many you need!)
2) For every 6 oz. of soda (this equals half a can of soda), add 2 drops of butter extract.
3) If using, add 2 drops of caramel extract.
4) Stir.
5) If your soda was not chilled ahead of time, add one ice cube.
6) Add a puff of whipped cream on top.
7) Serve with a vanilla wafer on the cream or on the side.
8) Enjoy!

This drink is best served immediately. Straws are optional (if you don't use them, you get whipped cream mustaches!)

Stay safe, everyone! We will see you soon.
