Summer Reading Challenge 2022 June 21st - August 19th Our Summer Reading program this year challenges readers of all ages to "Read Beyond the Beaten Path" and explore the world through the adventures waiting for you in books and at your library. Everyone is welcome to participate by reading, visiting the library, attending programs, or exploring digital challenges on Beanstack! Pembroke Public Library Book Club Tuesday, June 7th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. For our June meeting the PPL Book Club is reading We Begin at the End by Chris Whitaker, a character-driven mystery/thriller starring a fortysomething-year-old sheriff and a thirteen-year-old girl, about the families we're born into and the ones we create. A Beginner’s Guide to Nature Journaling Wednesday, June 22nd from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Do you love looking out the window, hiking, tending a garden, or something in between? From scientific discovery to creative art to casual doodling (in words or pictures), nature journals are a way to explore, re-create, and/or express our relationship with the natural world. Come join us for a fun, relaxing workshop as we explore types of journals and participate in some hands-on exercises to start creating our own. You may come away with a rewarding new (or renewed) hobby. All levels of experience are welcome! You don’t need to be an artist, writer, scientist, or photographer to enjoy the benefits of this enriching activity (though any of those talents are certainly also welcome!) Materials Needed: None! Participants will be provided with a blank journal.

Genealogy Night Tuesday, June 28th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Are you interested in finding out more about your genealogy? Do you have a cool story about one of your ancestors you want to share? Join in our monthly Genealogy Night to chat with other family history buffs! All are welcome to attend, from experienced researchers who would like to share tips or stories about great finds, to beginners who want to learn more about the research process and online resources. Library laptops will be available to explore Ancestry Library Edition.

Pembroke Public Library Book Club Tuesday, July 5th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. For our July meeting the PPL Book Club is reading Beasts of a Little Land by Juhea Kim, an epic story of love, war, and redemption set against the backdrop of the Korean independence movement. Teen Take-and-Make: Pride Fidget Toys Available in June while supplies last We know teens are busy with school, work, chores, and more so we're giving you an opportunity to craft on your own time. Pick up a Craft Kit in the YA Lounge and create a Pride fidget toy with the colors of the Rainbow Pride Flag or the Transgender Pride Flag.

Storytime Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Toddlers (ages 2-5) and their caregivers can enjoy an interactive storytime with songs, dances, games, and stories that encourage language development and social skills. Each themed storytime is followed by a craft.

Baby Lapsit Thursdays June 9th and 23rd at 10:30 a.m. Designed for babies and toddlers from 6 to 24 months, Lapsits are a great chance for caregivers to bond with their child while learning new rhymes and stories to share. Each program includes stretches, music, a story, and more followed by an open play time.

Babysitting Workshop (ages 11-18) Saturday, June 11th from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This full day interactive 4-H class trains young people to be responsible caregivers. Youth (ages 11-18) will receive a 4-H Certificate of Completion, Babysitter Handbook, and the skills they need to begin caring for young ones. Training will include child growth and development, care and safety of children, ideas for kid-appropriate activities and crafts, and basic first aid (not certified). Registration Fee: $10 (the rest of this workshop fee is generously funded by the Friends of the Pembroke Public Library). Registration is required in person at the library; payment and completed registration form (available at youth desk) are due at time of sign-up.

LEGO Club Tuesday, June 14th from 4-5 p.m. Kids ages 5+ are welcome to visit and build with the library LEGOs. Bring your neighbors, big siblings, and school friends! LEGO Club is designed to give kids a safe, creative environment in which they can freely build with LEGOs, interact with peers, and express themselves.

Puppy Dog Tales Thursday, June 16th from 4:15-5:00 p.m. Readers of all ages may read to a certified therapy dog to develop their literacy and presentation skills as well as build confidence and self-esteem. Our dogs and trainers provide a supportive environment to practice reading aloud. This is a drop-in event.

Block Party Playtime Tuesday, June 21st at 10:30 a.m. This is a special program for kids ages 1-7 to use creativity, imagination, and teamwork. Little ones can grow and play with all kinds of blocks; use your hands, carefully stack pieces together, knock them down, and do it all over again! Other items such as puzzles, play dough, and a pop-up tunnel will be available for all.

Encanto Sing-Along Thursday, June 30th from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Visit for a special showing of Encanto (2021) featuring popcorn, crafts, and options to interact with the movie by singing, clapping, squeaking and more. This is a drop-in event open to all ages. The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift -- every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals' last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger. Rated PG (Some Thematic Elements/Mild Peril) with a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes.
