Warmer weather is finally here! We have a full summer of library programs planned for all ages, including a Summer Reading Challenge with prizes for kids, teens and adults. Any books that you read for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten can double count for the Summer Challenge! Log into Beanstack, visit our website, or stop in the library for more information.

Summer Storytime Reminders:
  • In a change from last summer, registration is now required once per month for all weekday morning storytimes. Click here to view the library's calendar of events and to register.
  • Don't miss a few special Storytimes in the Park for kids ages 0-5 and their caregivers, no registration required! These will be held at 10 AM at Windfield Park, 14 Windfield Parkway, Waukee, on Tuesdays, May 16 and May 23.
We hope to see you at the library soon!

Read and Repeat

Why does your child love reading that one book over, and over, and over again, even though you are sick of it? The repetition helps strengthen connections in your child's brain and gives them a sense of comfort because it is something stable and predictable in their lives. If you need a bit of change when reading that same story, try to change things up in a small way by reading in a different accent, sing the words, or have your little one "read" it to you!

Crafts and Stickers

Using stickers, safety scissors, glue and other basic craft supplies helps develop fine motor skills and strengthen your child's fingers for future writing. With the nice weather, you can take crafting messes outdoors! Try going on a nature walk and making art with interesting twigs, leaves and other small items you find along the way.

Music Builds Early Literacy Skills

Listening and singing along to music has so many benefits for brain development. Music helps train our ears to hear the smaller sounds that make words, builds vocabulary, and develops early math skills. Read more about music's brain boosting benefits here. If you don't have an instrument at home, use a spoon on your pots and pans or have extra fun making your own out of recycled materials.

Play Boosts Mental Health

When kids play, it helps them develop on many levels physically and mentally, and when kids play with their grown-ups there are benefits for them both. "Children who play regularly with their parents are less likely to develop anxiety, depression, aggression and sleep problems." Read this article to find out more ways simple play can help your child bond, gain confidence, and process emotions.
