TeenTober Takeover at SML

October is TeenTober at Shreve Memorial Library and a teen invasion is taking over the libraries. Combining Teen Tech Week and Teen Read Week with Halloween themes, TeenTober is a scary good time when teen programming takes center stage inviting teens between the ages of 11 - 17 to discover something new at the library. Throughout the month of October, teens can participate in creepy crafts, perilous painting workshops, and frightfully fantastic films, and more... if they dare. All TeenTober programs are free and open to the public. Click here for a complete list of TeenTober programs at Shreve Memorial Library.

TeenTober was developed by YALSA as a month-long event to raise awareness of the importance of year-round teen services and connect teens with services and materials provided by their local institutions that will help them develop new skills and fuel their passions. Spotlight: Banned Books Week 2025
This week, Shreve Memorial Library is joining libraries across the country in celebrating the right to read by recognizing Banned Books Week, an annual celebration that brings attention to current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools, from October 5 - October 11. This year's Banned Books Week theme is "Censorship is so 1984," drawing on George Orwell's cautionary tale 1984 which warns about the dangers of censorship. "Censorship is So 1984" reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, and that censorship has no place in contemporary society. "Read for Your Rights" is a call to action that demands we not only exercise our own right to read but also defend that right for all readers. In 2024, the American Library  Association tracked 821 censorship attempts challenging 2,452 unique titles, the third highest number ever documented by ALA since it began tracking book challenges. Libby & OverDrive Hold Suspension Update

Attention Libby and OverDrive users. You may have noticed a recent change concerning holds in the platforms. These changes simplify how users manage suspended holds, creating a more accurate and equitable experience for users.

So what has changed? Hold suspensions have changed. Users in Libby, Sora, and OverDrive library websites no longer select an end date for their hold suspension. Instead, they simply choose to suspend or unsuspend a hold.

If a user misses their hold on its first delivery, it will be suspended until they unsuspend it. It no longer unsuspends after 7 days.Holds are automatically canceled if they are suspended for 365 days.

Benefits of this change include a fairer system in that users aren't offered a hold again until they are ready for it, copies of holds are freed up for users deeper in the waitlist, and unwanted holds sit unclaimed for less time.
