Norman is an Island
The poem No Man Is An Island by John Donne is one of my wife’s grandma’s favorite poems. As a gift, one of her grandchildren made a picture of “No Man is An Island” in ornate lettering. Alas, the lettering was a little too ornate, because when you look at “No Man”, it looks distinctly like it says “Norman”. Now whenever we visit grandma and we spot the picture, we inevitably remind each other that “Norman is an island”.

I have no idea who Norman is or why he is an island, but I gained a renewed respect for the poem when we moved to San Juan Island. Never before have I experienced such a warm and cooperative community. There are many fantastic reasons to visit the island- the climate, the wildlife, the island experience, but the reason why we decided to stay comes down to the community. Truly, no man is an island, but together we make San Juan Island the rich community that it is.

The Library is deeply grateful for our community partners, and this newsletter highlights just a few of the numerous partnerships and other ways that this community helps make this library an amazing one. We could not do everything we do without you, and we are proud to be a part of this community. Thank you!

Library Cards

The San Juan Island Library is pleased to announce a new kind of library card available at the library. The 3 For Me Library Card is a limited access card for residents of San Juan Island who are unable to verify a mailing address. The Library’s goal is to allow island residents in unstable housing conditions or newly moved and lacking proof of residence to have access to library resources. This easier-to-access card can then be used to check out three physical items from the library, as well as use the library’s digital services. Questions can be directed to Sue Vulgares at sjlib@sjlib.org.
