Thank you for supporting the library, visiting it in-person and online. All are welcome here. We invite you to stay a while, attend one of our free programs, find the latest book by your favorite author, or explore something new that’s just waiting for you to read it and expand your world.
The programs listed in this newsletter are all free and open to every member of the community to attend and enjoy. We hope you will find something that appeals to you. Our programs and events are intended to entertain, educate and connect people in the community like you.
While we are proud of the diverse programs we offer, our primary mission is to provide free access to books and other resources. We strive to nurture a love of reading by offering materials for all ages, abilities and walks of life, in a variety of formats, print and digital, books, magazines and more, in various languages, and covering a wide range of topics.
There may be materials in the library that don’t appeal to you but may appeal to others in the community. We include diverse voices and viewpoints in our library collection intentionally. We do this because we believe access to differing opinions and life experiences helps us build a more tolerant and understanding community. We hope that everyone can find something to read that is right for them, and our terrific staff is here to help every visitor find just what they are looking for.
And if you are looking for information about our beloved Central Library, I encourage you to see the latest update in this issue of Off the Shelf.
Best,
Tim McDonald

Librarian Diane Walker at Hastings Branch Recipient of Infectious Enthusiasm Award
The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library were excited to present Diane Walker, Senior Librarian of Hastings Branch Library since 2014, with the 2023 Infectious Enthusiasm Award on June 29. The award recognizes her warm engagement with patrons as well as her energy and support of Library staff. Diane’s outreach to the arts and interest in bringing the arts to the Hastings Branch is visible to all who enter there. Her welcoming smile is infectious, and her enthusiasm is genuine.
The Infectious Enthusiasm Award was initiated by The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library three years ago in honor of Terry Cannon, a Library employee at the Allendale Branch, whose innovation and creative spirit were much appreciated by patrons and staff. The Friends also wish to honor the consistent innovation by all Library employees throughout the pandemic, and the closing of Central Library.
Each year members of The Friends are asked to nominate Library employees of any position or branch who have been helpful and attentive to the needs of patrons. Each year’s selection is made by a committee of The Friends. To learn more about The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library and become a member read the update below on National Friends of the Library Week.

This is the eighth year that the City of Pasadena has celebrated National Coming Out Day. The annual event is a part of the City’s efforts to celebrate and foster an inclusive community. The City of Pasadena is an inclusive city. We are accepting of everyone regardless of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, marital status, socio-economic status, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, or disability. National Coming Out Day (October 11), celebrates coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ). Oct. 11, 2023, marks the 35th anniversary of National Coming Out Day.
Founded on the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, National Coming Out Day was first observed as a reminder that one of our most basic tools is the power of coming out. One out of every two Americans has someone close to them who is gay or lesbian. For transgender people, that number is only one in 10. Coming out - whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or asexual - STILL MATTERS. When people know someone who is LGBTQ, they are far more likely to support equality under the law. Beyond that, our stories can be powerful to each other.

This year is the 15th anniversary of ShakeOut, which began in Southern California in 2008. Millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover and Hold On during the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill.

For those visiting our libraries who wish to participate, this is an opportunity to practice your earthquake survival skills. This is an optional exercise. We encourage you to do so but you do not have to if you do not wish to. These kinds of drills train us to act quickly – to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON immediately to minimize injury so that we will be prepared when the next earthquake happens. You never know where you will be when an earthquake hits and it’s important to know what to do instinctively when the ground begins to shake.
