Pasadena’s First Librarian
Sarah Merritt, by virtue of being the first librarian in Pasadena, has a rightful and esteemed place in Pasadena history and library lore. When she assumed this role in 1884, the Pasadena Library, which wasn’t quite public yet, was essentially a room on the first floor of a two-story schoolhouse. Its collection totaled 329 books, and among the first books cataloged were The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens and works by William Shakespeare. Even though Mrs. Merritt had no predecessor to guide her and had no formal training in librarianship (as there was none at the time), she nonetheless helped the new library establish a firm footing in the community and managed its growth with commitment, resourcefulness and passion.
Originally from Massachusetts, Mrs. Merritt, who was a widow of a Civil War veteran, came to Pasadena as a governess accompanying a Boston family who visited for the winter. She quickly fell in love with the area and decided to stay with her three sons after the family returned to the East Coast. She was involved in community affairs and became acquainted with many of the city’s early pioneers. When Abbot Kinney proposed a library in the fledgling city, she was one of its key supporters and strongest advocates. It’s no surprise, then, that the Pasadena Library and Village Improvement Society, an organization that Kinney founded, appointed her to be the city’s first librarian when they leased an old school building and opened a library in 1884.
Mrs. Merritt led the Pasadena Library with devotion, determination and considerable enterprise during its early years. Throughout her tenure, she championed and embodied the ideas and values that a public library represents. From the first precarious years to her retirement in 1898, she remained a staunch supporter of the library who tirelessly planned and managed fundraising events to raise money that kept the library open and helped it grow. She would leave for her successor a beautiful Central Library (1890-1927) with a large collection of books, magazines, newspapers and many other types of reading materials.
In Memorial Park, there is a piece of the original Central Library on the corner of Walnut Street and Raymond Avenue that serves as a memorial dedicated to the memory of Pasadena pioneers like Sarah Merritt, “who in early and difficult days established here a public library as an expression of reverence for literature and art.”

PRIDE Month
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or questioning their gender), Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+ Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots and honor works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for LGBTQIA+ Americans. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBTQIA+ Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBTQIA+ Americans.
Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQIA+ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS.
