Highlights

Smash the Patriarchy
by Marta Breen

"The patriarchy is falling. It's time to smash it. This graphic novel shows you how. Patriarchy means "the rule of the father" and describes a system where men are in control. At least since the time of Aristotle, loud-mouthed men have called women weak and inferior. In entertaining comic book form, Smash the Patriarchy shames the culprits and salutes more than 100 inspiring women-from Pharaoh Hatshepsut to Mary Wollstonecraft to Petra Herrera-who stood up to them."
Akane-banashi, Vol. 1
by Yuki Suenaga

"Shinta Arakawa wants nothing more than to pass his shin'uchi exam--the test that would make him a top-rank headliner and master storyteller in the traditional Japanese art of rakugo. Akane Osaki, his daughter and biggest fan, spies on him while he practices and learns his routines for herself. When rakugo master Issho Arakawa expels everyone after the exam with no explanation, a fire is lit inside Akane. From that day forth, she has had one goal--to avenge her father and prove his art was worthy of the title of shin'uchi."

Featured Book
Some Mistakes Were Made by Kristin Dwyer
Reviewed by Giselle Carlos, age 18

Kristin Dwyer’s Some Mistakes Were Made is a heartfelt, memorable coming-of-age novel about young love and found homes. The novel revolves around best friends Ellis and Easton, who first grew close when Easton’s family opened up their arms to Ellis as a second home to her dysfunctional family life. Now a recent graduate, Ellis hasn’t spoken to Easton for a year after falling out, but when she’s invited back home for the summer, Ellis has no choice but to face everything she lost between them. As it switches between past and present perspectives, Some Mistakes Were Made is a compelling and fast-paced read.
