The Huntington Beach Public Library Monthly Newsletter

Message from the Manager

Dear Library Community,

As we move out of May gray and hopefully into a sunnier June (fingers crossed for no June gloom), the Library is about ready to launch our all-ages Summer Reading Program. Check out this newsletter and our online calendar for all of the fun programs and events we have for you to go along with our theme of "Read Beyond the Beaten Path." There are so many ways you can choose to participate this year: read a book or listen to an audiobook, visit all of our locations to see what's new, attend a program or storytime, or bring your friends and family for a library trip.

There’s a lot of heaviness in the world right now and our hearts go out to the family members and all those affected by the recent shootings in both New York and Texas. The Library hopes to be a bright spot, a place of community, education, resources, and entertainment - for everyone. As the esteemed Mr. Rogers said, "...look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." We ask our community to help each other and let us help you. Bring your questions and ideas and connect here.

We look forward to seeing you all at your Library.

Jessica Framson, Library & Cultural Services Manager
Currently reading: People We Meet on Vacation, by Emily Henry, and The Unsinkable Greta James, by Jennifer E. Smith

Exploring Books from the LGBTQIA+ Experience
The Huntington Beach Public Library and libraries across the country celebrate June as Rainbow Book Month, a national celebration of authors and books that honor the lives and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community. No longer a place for just books, libraries are transforming lives by fostering community, understanding, and access to the very best in LGBTQ+ literature and community resources for all ages.

What's new in June @HBPL?

It’s your Lucky Day at HBPL! Thanks to the First Partner’s Office, the California State Library, and California State Parks, HBPL now offers State Park Passes for checkout to library cardholders. This month, we’re adding fifteen more passes to our collection, including ten Lucky Day passes. In addition to the reservable passes, we’ll have several passes available on a first-come, first-served basis at each of our branches. These passes will not be available for holds and check out for one week. Stop by the Main Street branch on your next trip to Bolsa Chica State Beach or Banning before your day at Huntington State Beach. Maybe you’ll get lucky and snag a pass for free parking!

This month in the Makerspace, we have a new heavy duty sewing machine, perfect for redoing your patio chairs for summer picnics and fixing torn sofa cushions if you’d rather enjoy the AC. It can handle leather, upholstery, canvas, and other thick materials. On June 14th, sign up for a special Father’s Day Gift program. Make a gift for the father-figure in your life – a phone stand, key chain, golf cover, greeting card, or pencil box. Coaches will show you how to make a personalized gift using Makerspace equipment. Best part? It’s all free!

For recent grads, EBSCO Learning Express is an excellent way to keep learning and refining your skills over the summer. Job seekers can get tips on preparing for an interview, improve their computer skills, or practice career exams, like the NCLEX. You’ll also find GRE tests, Citizenship practice, and more.

On June 25th, we invite you to celebrate World Beatles Day. Use your library card to celebrate with tips from our music selector.
